    Default Papacy

    Hi there, watched the 'grand preview' before and have to say looks amazing. One question;

    About the Papal States, would much work have to be done to make it playable? If so how much and is it possible?

    Cheers, I know you can swap factions around (dscr-strat, notepad) put in some mods it doesn't work and just screws up the whole script.

    Cheers anyway

    I honestly doubt playing for the Papal states is much fun.

    Maybe not for you and other players, but I think it would be interesting.. Maybe not so much of a challenge if you can excomunicate (sorry about the spelling) other catholic nation just by attacking them. But would be 'fun' or 'different' to be able to control Inquisitors, The Pope himself and other figures.

    I don't know just an idea which I though could've been interesting but as far as expanding Papal States wouldn't really expand due to historically only controlling Rome/Vatican City (correct me if I'm wrong).

    Cheers,

    Actually the Papal States were most of central Italy and were received from Charlesmagne to rule. It was a means of the Pope to maintain some wealth so the Church could defend itself against less pious rulers. It wasn't until the Free Mason revolution of 1860 or so that stripped those lands from the Church and reduced it to Rome.

    Moreover, the Vatican laid claim to that territory until it officially surrendered the claim when Mussolini compensated the Church for the loss. He signed a concordat with Pope Pius XI in 1932, which created Vatican City as an official city state.

    Well unfortunately, no, the Papal States are still not playable. In fact, the whole Papal Elections might just be scrapped in the final version so it's highly unlikely.

    The portion of the Papal elections where different factions could cast votes to elect the new Pope has been removed, however, everything else about the elections will remain the same.

And if it is part of your territory, then does the territories that the Pope or Papal generals conquer become part of these Papal states, or do they go straight to you?
    The HRE will have a degree of influence over states such as the Papacy, however, this will not be the case at the start of the campaign, as Gregory VII had excommunicated the Emperor Henry IV and was supporting a Saxon rebellion.

    The Papal states were liable to be biased to their supporters. Yes, certain popes waged wars and laid claim to tracts of land. They started with the Exarchate, which, I believe Pepin III, not Charlemagne gave to them (Pepin fought against the lombards before his son, but made peace, demanding the Pope be given land), and then later claimed Romagna and.. other territories?

    However, I presume this will be presented, in a semi-autonomous nation which you wield a light bit of control over, am I correct? I believe that this is the better solution. Some questions. But wait, I need not know, for it will make release oh so much more sweet.

    I agree with that, those are two vaild angles on how it could be done.. I'm sure the team (Dominion of the Sword) have looked at The Papal States and the depth of this particular faction.

    One question I would like to ask the public is;

    If the Papal States was playable would you give the faction a decent go - say up to 150 turns or just get bored?

    I know from experience with the present Papal states, I get bored once I rush naples, Florence and Genoa.

    Although I think that the Papal States as a faction would be interesting to play for awhile, the thought of the Pope ruling a huge empire kind of freaks me out. I usually sell/trade off Cairo or whatever crusade conquest I pick up if my faction is too far off and it looks kinda weird on the map.

    I don't see the Papal States as a faction being very good for a long haul.
