    1) We expect a fair level of activity. Doesn't need to be hyper, but a post a month won't suffice, especially if other areas are lacking.

    2) Historians need to be able to interpret and present historical information in their own words with the aid of primary sources. No degrees are required, but we've had a few "researchers" who felt they could post random pictures or quote website articles verbatim and that counted as research. That is not up to standard for us, because we could do that ourselves.

    3) Unless research is of university quality and so much can be gleaned from the sheer proficiency of the interpreted information, a researcher needs to understand or be willing to learn enough about game mechanics to help interpret history into quantifiable things that can be put in the mod.

"Zhu Xi was a Neo-Confucian thinker who was a main player in the cultural development of China."

That's all well and good, but as a coder, that does me no good unless I asked for that specific piece of information. On the other hand:

You: Zhu Xi was a Neo-Confucian thinker who was a main player in the cultural development of China.
Me: So how can that be represented in game terms?
You: He could possibly be an ancillary until his death.
Me: Okay good. Here's a list of possible bonuses ancillaries can give. Help me understand what he should provide for a player and how a player might go about obtaining him(the more specific and directly interpretable the better).
You: He would give a small influence bonus and a large piety bonus. There'd only be one of him obviously, and it could be obtained by being in a settlement with a well-developed Daoxue temple, about a 5% chance.

On that information I could set it up almost exactly. The important thing is I'm supposed to know more about the game mechanics and researchers more about the history, but if I have to take the raw data, figure out the game implications, determine its usage, and then do the implementation on top of that, I may as well have got the raw data myself. Catch my drift?

    4) Need to be willing to do independent research with the goal of developing the mod, specifically in the more integral sections. The above Zhu Xi example is what I'd call 'fluff', one unique ancillary doesn't make a game, in fact it's only present 0.01% of the time in the game experience. Also should keep tabs on all threads where artists and coders are posting about things they're working on or need to be worked on and be willing to shift focus to aid those efforts.

    5) Finally and perhaps most importantly, need to understand that everything posted within the Dev forum is completely confidential and can only be authorized for public display by the mod leaders. The second anyone finds leaked information from the dev forums attributed to a dev, it's off the team no questions asked and no quarter given.

If you're good with all of that, then let me know.
Currently awaiting further contact. Also I think those five guidelines could do well in our Team thread for the historian position. Have anything to add to them?

These are sound guidelines. I approve.

I would love it if someone actually followed them.

    hello,

I'm assuming that you are still on the look out for potential researchers for your project, in which case, I'd love to offer my assistance.

I'm a college student (junior) majoring in English literature with ready assess to library materials as well as other academic sources. As per necessary, I have a profound love of history and find many different cultural histories, included among which:Asia, widely fascinating; albeit, I primarily focus on European history, I'd love to devote a bit more time towards researching the Orient.

Even though my post count on the forums is nill, I'm very familiar with the TW series and can modify my research to be useful within the context of how the game engine operates. Will I'm not overly experienced with graphical editing (for TW), I'm familiar with basic syntax. That is not to say that I CAN'T do graphical editing, I've just never attempted it within the TW engine. I'm a resource staff member for "rpgmakervx.net" and I primarily work with pixel art, but I'm a decent artist overall, so I'm sure I could eventually help out within the graphical department as well

    but I digress,

Initially, I'd love to help you guys out with research and see what I might be able to do from there. I have no problem with meeting group set deadlines or contributing regularly, as I basically read up on this type of stuff for pleasure

Hello, I'm messaging you to apply as a researcher for the modification, 'All Under Heaven'. I'm currently a university student working towards an English degree. In addition to the necessary writing skills, I also have the research skills required to search through my university's library, whether online, or actually on the campus.

I have a deep love for history, so this in itself will be leisure work for me, so I have no problem with consistently contributing to this endeavor.

    Thank you for your time,
    Ethien

    Hello,

I was reading through the threads and saw that recruitment is open for both "historians" and "text descriptors". I saw the last time the post was updated was quite some time ago, but I was just going to let you know that if you need another historian or text descriptor, I'd be more than happy to help.

I have more knowledge about Japan and China from this area, but I'll have no problem researching, or writing things up. If all the spots are filled, that's fine. Just let me know.

    Chris

    Dear Sir,

My name is Robert Nakandakari Crabtree, and I am a descendant of both Robert E Lee on my Father's side, and a descendant of the minor Nakandakari samurai from Okinawa on my Mother's side. The Nakandakari were originally retainers of the Okinawan king( their name was Uzi) before the Satsuma clan of the Shimazu had them change their name to a more Japanese name (Nakandakari) I'm a serious medical student, and a true fan of Total War. I'd like to assist you and the team doing research if you still need it.

I used to do research for a non-profit, and I am very resourceful. I do understand your need to get to primary and secondary documents if possible. I am located in the Louisville KY area, so I would be able to go to the University of Louisville to do research. I also am very responsible about getting projects done on a tight schedule.

I am greatly looking forward to playing your mod, and hope to contribute in some small way. Please feel free to contact me if interested.

    Robert Crabtree aka Nakandakari Lobato

    Greetings AL.

My name's Justin, I've been playing TW games since Shogun, but only recently found the TWC and the modding community in general. I just graduated from college with a history degree focusing on, ironically, medieval asia. I speak and read a little chinese, mongolian and Tibetan, I spent six months studying abroad in China (Chengdu, Sichuan) and will be heading back to teach english at some point in 2010.
I have a whole lot of time on my hands at this point and would love to spend it helping you guys with this mod. I'm a TW addict but have been utterly depressed about not having an asian mod to play, so finding this was just about the most exciting thing since learning to use chopsticks!
I have a pretty decent sized library of books on my own, but as my dad is a college professor I have access to a university library. I think thats about it as far as credentials go, so if you guys would like my help as a researcher I'd be more than willing to help. Please let me know.

    Cheers
    Justin

    Hello,

Just wanted to say that I've been lurking the AUH forums for a bit but am very excited for this mod to come out since its the only Asian based one.

I've been working my way through the mod tutorials to see if I can develop my abilities in any way to help you guys out somehow. I know that your standards are way too high for me to really contribute much, but I think that helping out at the basic coding/anything level (implementing your design ideas, doing the gruntwork) is definately doo-able for me.

So far, the only modding I've done is just tweaking tiny bits of other people's mods just for my own benefit (unit stats and such). I just was wondering which tutorials you'd recommend I should work through if I could be of help eventually. There are so many, it would be nice to know what I should know if I could help out in the "basic" coding department.

Hi, I was looking at All Under Heaven forum and I saw you're looking for people to join the team. If you still need help (I know the post is dated on January 2009), I can write almost everything, from traits to battle reports or events messages.
In any case, congratulations for the mod and keep up the work!

Hi, this mod project looks interesting and thought I could probably contribute. My qualifications include:

-played the total war series since shogun,
-able to read books in Chinese and I'd say decent awareness of Asian history
    -have access to university libraries,
-my area of work is a mix of technical and social sciences so I'm aware of the transition from description to codable attributes.

Main downside is that I'm working on my phd and have college teaching obligations as well, so my level of activity over time may fluctuate. I'm willing to help w/ the research work for the mod, let me know.

    Augustus,

My name is James and I am a college student in England. My hobbies include Total War (obviously) and reading history. I hope to study to a PhD (Doctorate) in Medieval history. Though my main area of expertise is Ancient Rome, and Medieval England (primarily the Angevin Empire) I do not mind taking some time to research topics on the Far East. I have access to a reference and public library near my home.

I am not on the Centre Forums as much as I would like to be - but I check up on mod progress once every week or so, If you want to use me as a resarcher, use me. I will try to be a competent a resarcher as possible - but just give me a specified topic else I wouldn't know where to begin!

Feel free to PM me anytime,

    Yours Sincirely,
    James Griffen

    Hi Augustus Lucifer!

Your AUH mod looks really great, i really love the japanese units and i would like to collaborate with you in making some 2D ui's (and other 2D stuff) would you need some.

You can check my signature, it will redirect you on 2 of my existing submods aiming at enhancing existing mods 2D ui's (some of my work are already included in Call of Warhammer mod for M2TW and some will be included in Stainless Steel RR/RC compil for M2TW).

Let me know if you are interested, and in this case, how we can proceed.

    Cheers,
    Cédric.

I noticed on the AUH forums that you were looking for researchers to assist in your project and it peaked my interest. I am an Asian Studies major (Senior now) and I know a thing or two about that Asia place. I studied abroad in China (and visited just about every historical building, temple and site in Northern China), my final paper for last semester was a 25 page paper on Samurai that would have been longer if the teacher had not threatened to deduct points, and I own an extensive library of both college text books and just plain history books concerning China, as well as being close friends with the head of the Asian Studies department at my school.

I have wandered the TWC forums for about a year now, but never really felt the need to post anything (notice the recent join date), but I am liking what I am seeing with AUH and if you would have me, I would like to help.

    Default Re: Applicants

Today I went through and contacted some of the folks who had applied and appeared to be active. The following are those that I've contacted so far:

    cedric37
    Koujow
    Lyonn
    Lux_Aeterna

The following are those I may or may not contact, due to needing to attempt e-mail correspondence or due to a past record with the team.

Nakandakari Lobato, who was on the team at one point, seems to be very active in the Shogun II TW forums.

dacleon (lcao@unc.edu) - Hasn't logged on in a couple months, but we have his e-mail. Seems to be working on a PhD so may be worth contacting as well.

Ethien (ProvocativeThinker@gmail.com) - Hasn't logged on since posting in our need for researchers thread. Good application and positioning though, so will likely contact.

jimmi001 (jimmi001@googlemail.com) - I know you said 'No' to him because he signed "Academic" at the end, but Meg signs "Devoirs the Empress" on everything and she was an Admin! May be worth contacting, not sure yet.

Maitreya (mcous@gmail.com) - Pursuing history degree, has one of our sigs, purportedly has lots of free time, worth a contact.

samtan77 (jknet8@hotmail.com) - PMed me last November, left an e-mail. 'Hobby Historian'. Unsure if will contact due to already massive time gap and non-integral nature of application.

    The following are currently relegated:

Azraelthefallen (was previously on team and was removed)
Cthulhu Khan (was previously on team and was removed)
crusader knight (was previously on team and was removed)
hypo (not entirely clear on this one yet)
Nighthawk (not a very convincing application, doesn't seem willing to put in much effort)
Pazu the Kitsune (limited scope of interest, has his own mod to worry about)
    pericles_plato (insufficient application)
TokugawaUchiha9 (not a proper application, I can just imagine your response...)
    Weltschmerz (not research oriented)
Wert (Said he could "paste units", no clue what that means. I did respond to him though asking him to clarify, but relegated until determined otherwise; last thing I need is a very inexperienced coder causing me more trouble than is added via shoddy Git commits.)

These are the inactive devs I've contacted so far:

    Eisberg
(sgawara seems to have shown up at random without my prompting)

I still need to contact the following inactive or needing direction devs:

    Asean
    fugazi_
    KR153
    Shadowcry
    STELLover
    tokimitsu
    vietanh797

The following users need to be contacted concerning Art, so should be on your to-contact list:

    Vaz
    S-te-fan
    u_have_krabs
sud commander (will want a task, but he's reliable if given one; I haven't been able to update the 2D Artist Tasks thread yet so don't reference that)

In addition to that I added Tekenako to the team as a Concept Artist, and I recently received a message from Toboe who is back and wants to make a video(I told him an installer should be forthcoming probably next weekend, since I'm busy as hell studying yet and really shouldn't have taken the time out to do this today, lol).

Sent a bad cop stylee msg, here's the response so far....

Vaz - no reply, remove after 24th June - now removed from the team
S-te-fan - seems to be back ? (will give him a month's grace)
u_have_krabs - can be removed, no longer able to contribute
sud commander - has had some RL issues, back and interested in contributing.
