Default Eskimo lady enraged at Eskimo lollies

    Oversensitive Eskimo is oversensitive

She should just harden up. She was just visiting New Zealand, so what right does she have to tell the Kiwis what's offensive and what's not? What I love is the candy company won't back down.

Are there problems in Inuit communities? Certainly. Her efforts would be better spent dealing with the high rates of alcoholism and infant mortality. Instead she chooses to focus on a brand of New Zealand candy.

I doubt anyone would care if Eskimos started producing "white-people" candy, as they suggest in the article. In fact, they could even come in different flavors and shapes- Soccer Mom, Emo, and McDonalds Frequenter would be hits, I imagine. It'd give me a good laugh.

This reminds me of The Homies. You can buy them from vending machines. Hispanics don't complain about them. I guess this Eskimo got an icy stick up her ass.

"Eskimo" is actually an offensive term for them as it is a term invented by foreigners to designate them.
They'd rather be refered to as the name of their people (Inuit or Yupik).

I'd prefer to be called Norsk, not Norwegian. However, it's hard for a Brit to say "Hei Nordmann!", so he just say: "Hello Norwegian!"

Why should it be different for Eskimos?

Well I think anyone has a right to protest any dipiction of thier own culture. The problem is that the people that dont have a problem with it arent the ones being subjected to it. Just like the use of "injuns", is a word that is used by white people, always in a derogatory manner. Most people dont know that it is offensive, but its always used in a derogatory or belittling way, its offensive. If its not okay to call a group a derogatory name then it shouldnt be okay for another. Im sure that the people that referred to black people as darkys (or worse) didnt think that what they were saying was that bad.

"Eskimo" in one translation of an Algonquin word meaning "eaters of raw meat". It is a belittling term.

The girl is alittle fired up and part of her argument to me is alittle weak, but still if it offends her she should have a right to voice it.

The NZ public doesn't even care about it. We have bigger issues to deal with. Mainly with John Key not putting his foot down and being bossed around by everyone else.

I seriously don't know who rules my country anymore. It feels like the Maori and ACT parties do.

I wouldn't be offended if I saw a lolly with some Maori guy on it. I'd smile

Besides, we generally use the word "Eskimo" to describe someone who lives in the far north. I have some family who live right near the top of Norway in the Arctic Circle and we always call them Eskimo's.

You know what, there are football ice-cream in Norway. As a football fan, I find this deeply infuriating. It's almost shocking how the ice-cream manufacturers makes people interested in football associated with the cold, heartless cream of ice. I get mad.
