what is defence and how is it calculated?

do you need to hold ground for defence to take effect? or just stand still?

anyone? i know attack means how much damage you do, charge is a bonus to that, but how is defense calucalted?

Attack is rolled against defense anytime a unit attacks another one in melee, although I don't know how. I don't think units actually have hitpoints in Empire, everything dies in one "hit". Attack vs. Def just determines the odds of a hit. Defense has zero effect against missile weapons, for instance.
