They are melodic power death metal....aka as fake metal.

And covers are done for various reasons. They dislike the song so they make a cover to make fun of it. Or they do it for fun. Or for thematic reasons. Or to pay homage.

This is the only good metal cover of a pop song I've ever heard.

People do covers all the time, nothing new.

The question why this? I mean for fun obiviously, but this is the last kind of thing I would have listened to when I was a raging young metal head.

On the wiki page...the only bands listed in links that I even think are good is...Swallow the Sun, Insomnium and Carcass (and they are mentioned as an inspiration for some bands only...)

It isn't declining. It depends on where you live. Where I live, it is more underground than anything. But the Bay Area Thrash scene is kicking hard again with bands like Merciless Death and Warbringer, for instance.

And Lamb of God is an abomination.
