    Default Popular/ Famous sayings... Post them + your opinion of them!

    Hi guys,

    Ok rules are simple post a famous saying/ Quote and simply give me your opinion of it i.e. if you agree or disagree.

    Ok 2 to start with -

    "The bigger they are, the harder they fall."

    I completely disagree with this! I have a feeling its a saying made by people with small man syndrome (I'm only 5'4" myself so I'm not having a go at short people) to make them "feel" able to take on bigger guys. Now weather the saying is ment to actually mean they fall harder in the sense of them weighing more therefore falling over results in more damage to them or the surface they fall on thats fair enough but I feel its the latter.

    I've done combat sport (boxing/kick boxing) on and off for a number of years now and I think the saying should actually be -

    "The bigger they are, the harder they PUNCH"

    Right second saying -

    "You don't know what you've got, till its gone"

    Agree with 100%.

    Fun topic, but should probably be in Thema Devia.

    I regard this saying as both valuable and dangerous. It teaches one to recognise the value of the concrete, as opposed to unrealistic aspirations. But there are also overtones of possesivism in the modern context that imply that things are only valuable in as much as they can be controlled and owned.

    Love this one. It's from popular film Gladiator. If it were from a famous piece of literature it would be oh so more remembered and famous. As an atheist the actions we do in life and how people will remember us by is our immortality.

    Again so true, we've got everything going for us as young people, sharpness of mind, healthy bodies, yet we're impatient, stupid, too hasteful or possibly to fearful. An old person who learns the lessons of life is more worldy and would know what to do but it's too late for them, time has passed them by.

    A typical quote of an irishman. It sums up the opinion even the Irish upperclasses viewed the 'lower' classes.

    It actually an inversion of the then common addage 'drink is the curse of the working classes'. Wilde was turning this distillation of Puritan values on its head.

    What Ghandi means is that there is more than enough resources for everyone in the world if everybody would live simpler, but it's not enough resources in the world for everyone to live extravagant lives. You can't deny the truth behind this quote, because it's proven every day everywhere. I agree with the quote.

    I don't agree with the quote if I am supposed to take it verbally, but when I look behind the words I find myself agreeing with it. People are always driven by a will to get more, look at the Vikings for example: what they couldn't trade they pillaged. A criminal isn't born a criminal, he becomes so because of desperation.

    No one is completely honest, so no, no one can earn a million dollars honestly. However, I do believe a person can earn a million dollars without committing a crime.

    I interpreted this as without money I can't completely enjoy life or something similar... Well, without money I would have to find my own food instead of paying a farmer indirectly to butcher something for me. I don't enjoy butchering, so I am happy that I have enough money to pay the farmer. I agree with the quote.

    I completely disagree with this quote. No one would remember Crassus (Krøsus) better than most Roman commanders, if it weren't for the fact that he was worth approx. 169 billion $. However, I doubt his funeral was any big considering that he was captured by the Parthians and had boiling gold poured down his throat. However, I do believe Julius Cæsar had quite a grand funeral.

    A fine sentiment, but it is a sentiment that is often far too hard to follow. If you feel yourself vulnerable to taunting etc, dont taunt. Unfortunately I'd say humans are in built to "throw stones" and nearly all humans happen to "live in glasshouses", which makes it something hard to actually live by.
