The past few days the US President has been attending a conference where the President of Venzuela, the erstwhile Hugo Chavez, decided he "wants to be your friend" of Obama. He even presented him with a book gift describing how S. America had been pillaged by (mainly) America for 5 centuries (never mind the fact the USA only became a country roughly 250 years ago).
Obama of course is taking some heat from the Repubs. His response is that being cordial doesn't represent a security threat.
What's your take on this (and the overtures to Iran)? Is Obama fulfilling the credo of Teddy Roosevelt to "walk softly and carry a big stick", or is he undermining the "respect" (some would say fear) of America by other nations?
Personally, I am very impressed so far with his style in international diplomacy, and have full confidence when his term in office end in roughly 8 years again we will hear there have been no new attacks on America while he was on watch.
