Default The new bed-buddies...Barack and Hugo!

The past few days the US President has been attending a conference where the President of Venzuela, the erstwhile Hugo Chavez, decided he "wants to be your friend" of Obama. He even presented him with a book gift describing how S. America had been pillaged by (mainly) America for 5 centuries (never mind the fact the USA only became a country roughly 250 years ago).

Obama of course is taking some heat from the Repubs. His response is that being cordial doesn't represent a security threat.

What's your take on this (and the overtures to Iran)? Is Obama fulfilling the credo of Teddy Roosevelt to "walk softly and carry a big stick", or is he undermining the "respect" (some would say fear) of America by other nations?

Personally, I am very impressed so far with his style in international diplomacy, and have full confidence when his term in office end in roughly 8 years again we will hear there have been no new attacks on America while he was on watch.

Hugo Chavez is a BAMF. So is Obama. I would totally make out with both of them.

A big stick is only a threat if you think it will be used.

While I'd laugh my ass off at the whining from the left if he were to use it on something with direct American interests, I think its safe to say that won't happen.

Obama might have the biggest stick on the planet, but its flaccid right now.

im not sure you fully understand what "speak softly and carry a big stick" means, the stick being flaccid is kind of the point.

Obama is more comfortable around people like Castro(s), Chavez and Ahmedinijad than he is with a business person.

You forgot Bin Laden, cause he's not only a commie muslim, he's also a terrorist.

Can you provide a link Mr. Original Poster? I'd like to see more about this.

and here was me thinking Bush would have been more comfortable with the last at least two of those, warmongers and supporters of torture hanging out together. So much to talk about! Wether waterboarding or electrecotuion is the more effective method of torture, how to convince the populus to submit to new laws that take away rights for 'security' etc.

I have no issues with being cordial. And I like Roosevelt's idea of treading softly but carrying a big stick. There's no reason to bully people. Their actions should dictate how much carrot they get versus how much stick =D.

A picture of Nixon and Mao would be pertinent too.

In the real world there is no reason not to be generally friendly to Venezuela, only in the western propaganda bubble the question even arises because Venezuela is too democratic now for elite tastes (and therefore too democratic for the western media, which calls democracy "authoritarian", with the impressionable parts of the constituency buying it, even if they live in a far more authoritarian and antidemocratic environment themselves).

Having political roots in Populism does not necessarily make one democratic, nor does it disqualify one from being authoritarian. In President Chavez's case, he has clearly demonstrated his own ineptitude, certainly more so than even President Bush. As his economic nationalization process begins to collapse, President Chavez becomes more and more authoritarian.

Then again, I have been brainwashed by the Western Media Elites. Half the time I don't know what to think until I open up the New York Times and watch Fox News. Thank God for them!
