    Default Help a Beginner :D

Hi, I'm new to the mod and have not played a serious campaign in which I've been really involved. I usually play custom battles then get bored. I want to start a campaign but have no clue who to choose. In my first attempt I made it to my first Imperial Reform around 520 AD or something and then haven't played it since. Is there anything that kind of summarizes what each army's strengths and weaknesses are? Just looking for something to keep me interested I hear all this talk about great campaigns and loyal legions and i feel left out :/

Thank you so so much! and this community seems awesome!

    Hi M.
I have been with R.S. for over three years,And there are meny good factions.
The Greek cities are always a challenge, play them at high/very high
also Perg,or even playing one of the eastern faction to protect Jerusalem is fun also. Or be a barbarian and attack Rome!

I believe your saying 520 BC. the mod just doesn't go that far.

When you start the game, there are some rules you can go by, called the house rules.
Wait until 30 or 40 turns before you advance your troops.
build your economy, and protect your borders, but don't attack just yet, as you let other factions grow you will see larger stacks.

RS2 is going to be very fun, with new everything!!
You will not be bored! From reading the true descriptions of the units,
Environments are beautiful, and units in full detail. Buildings will be informative and art work out of this world! meny meny meny cool stuff added also!
Plus the battles, will be nothing less of art work!!
I hope this helps, and hope you enjoy this mod, til the masterpiece comes!

you must be going by roman time ? A.C.E.?
That was our last update for time. I didn't mean B.c.

It,s been a while since i played the eastern factions on RS1.
Since I've been busy on RS2, so play around with it.

I would probably build my archer units, and take the smaller factions out, don't fight just yet with the Seleucid's, or be crushed! Have fun!

pontus is a fun one. It starts in a relatively safe position, but its enemies grow quickly. Fighting the big grey monster (the seleucids) will keep your armies busy for a long time. Also, armenia is either a potential ally or a harsh enemy with their heavy cav running circles around your infantry.

You can take asia minor, make raids across the black sea, invade Mesopotamia or even strike into egypt and greece. It has a wide range of units for fighting most types of enemies, so thats my suggestion.

Try play as Pergamum. They have a great selection of troops, all of wich are great. Build slow taking your time. Take over asia minor. Make sure to get trade with every faction you can. Once you have asia minor, head for greece. Take sothern greece and head north. Take over Macadiona. And remember to take your time and build your economy up. Once you have all of greece and asia minor you will have the most profitadle cities in the world. Then you can either head west for rome and gaul, north for dacia, or east for the selecuids.

Any of the eastern factions! And the time is Ab Urbe Condita, latin for when the city was founded [Rome].

520 AUC is about 233 BC I think, as Rome was founded in 753BC if I remember correctly.

Yes, I've been playing as Pergamum quite a few times. When you see the AI control them more often than not they take control of Asia Minor. When I play them they usually end up controlling both sides of the Aegean - so you go up against mighty Macedon.

Macedon is another of my favorite factions. They have a decent unit roster and are close enough to Rome to be able to take them on before anyone else can destroy them. It's a challenge though.

Syracuse can also be fun - they are in a fairly challenging position being between Rome and Carthage. Once you take control of Sicily from the rebels and Carthage you have a fairly secure base. I then tend to head off to Corsica/Sardinia and maybe Palma. Once you've got the islands it's up to you - Italy or the Carthage home settlements. Either is a challenge.

The Seleucids have a decent unit roster like Macedon. However, there are even more challenges at the start of a campaign. I still think the best way forward is to let Asia Minor go and hang onto everything else. If you try and hang onto everything you will be stretched way too far as with such a large empire you have enemies (or potential enemies everywhere). Once you've managed to get your economy working and infrastructure working you armies should make anyone tremble! I think it would be true to state that they have the meanest elephants available.

All of the above are phalanx based armies - so hammer (cavalry and flanking units) and anvil (phalanx) tactics are the way forward.

I've also played Carthage a few times. They are also a phalanx based army. Like the Seleucids you have access to elephants.

I do play as Rome as well - I started with them but wanted a bigger challenge as the legion is one of the powerful armies around.

For me, I love being the little guy and defying the empires!

Try the Armenians or the Bosporans. Really fun but can be challenging when you've got the Selucids on your tails!

You could always play as Rome again and try to get things going a bit smoother, but I find with rome that it's just a sail to go through most places and then you hit an economy crisis and it gets boring because everyone revolts.

The main thing to do on any faction though is to let the AI evolve. If you go blitz everything straight away, the computer won't have a chance to build anything decent and you'll haev some pretty big money problems on your hands.

    hope that helped

Sarmatia is good. Just don't spam-build Horse Arcehrs, they are a bit too easy to use. Once you try expanding with them, they take a long while to get any new territories as they are so far apart in the steppes. When I play them, you get the challenge of taking on the mid-late larger AI superpowers. Likes of Mcedon/Rome/Carthage, once they have a massive empire

If you want you could run with mroe than one campaign at once

it's all up to you. Each faction has its pros and cons.

Well, even with a phalanx army you can still attack. Simply move forward to being close enough to the opposing army to prompt them to attack you.

Even if they don't you can keep moving the phalanx forward slowly until the two lines meet.

I always keep the phalanx on 'guard mode' to allow the unit to keep their shape.

Always remember the guard the phalanx's flanks and rear.

You can set 'waypoints' on the battlefield. Simply use the shift key and right mouse click on the waypoint. You can set up to a dozen waypoints.

Basically the hammer and anvil tactic is this:

This isn't too good a diagram but it gives the basic jist. You pin the enemy with your phalanxes while you flank them and hit them in the back/sides with heavy cavalry.

wow, thats an awesome diagram Also is there a way when i have my guys fighting to not have the guys in the back just stand there? like a way to push em all in?

Also is there a way to have flanking smooth? For instance I click to move to their side, then i click attack and it takes like 10 seconds to stop and turn around lol

Thanks again Thats a cool tactic

Micromanaging can and will require effort when you eventually build an ''empire''
Automanage is okay but most players including myself micromanage
Micromanaging is basically organising your recruitment ques and also construction ques yourself , you are in control but Ive also noticed personally with automanage the A.i wont upgrade cities until everything else is built resulting in low public order, If micromanaging isnt your thing possibly a mix the policies of your regions , I.e. Economic for Pergamum and Inner settlements or cultural policy and Military for your border regions
    Happy playing
    Hope that helps

Personally when I do a Perg campaign I will take the seleucid settlements which are close by also I ally with Armenia and Ptolomies

Ok...first off, with this mod, no town/city should be ungoverned. Recruit a govener and train him up in a city with an academy or scriptorium, this will give him some management and command points, thus making him a better general.

First thing you need to do with new towns that you intend on making a permenant part of your empire is make sure there is a good standard of living for the people there. Do this by building the farms, basic markets, sewers and other health related buildings and also providing them with a good law system to abide by (by building the academy and certain barracks). I'm not sure if Pergamum have them, but in the Armenian campiagn, I could build execution squares and secret police HQs to help quell rioters.

Once that is done, you can either take public happiness a step further by building the entertainment buildings, or you could move into either trade, or military.

    Trade

To ensure a strong economy, you need trade routes. Some settlements provide better trade than others and that's where you should really develope trade related buildings first. on the building scrools there is a button somewhere that shows what trade is like in certain settlements. Anyway, you need traders/markets/agoras/forums. Whatever the culture, you need their equivlent. so build them asap. Then build roads so that your trade caravans can quickly move from town to town. Also, you will need ports, the larger the port, the more inporting and exporting of goods you can do. This all leads to strengthening your economy for whatever means.

Although this is almost 100% reliant on the fact that you have established trade rights with as many factions as possible.

    Military

If you are going to go into the military side of things, then try to focus all upgrades in one settlement until your economy can stand building up lots of military based settlements. Of course you will need a barracks, it's the basic building for training troops and certain barracks also provide a law bonus (can't remember what ones). Once you've build your barracks to the level of your settlement, then start thinking of either arachery ranges, stables or blacksmiths. Archery ranges will help when you need to defend your settlement because as it states, you can train archer, peltasts and other aor ranged units. Later on you can get onagers and catapults from the siege works. Stables obviosly provide you with your cav, the higher the stable level, the heavier and more efficient the cav becomes. Blacksmiths give all troops trained in that settlement an armour and weapon bonus (it's the gold, silver and bronze sword/shield that appears on some of the unit cards). Personally, I prefer to build these before anything other than barracks because you will only have to retrain the men you have bought anyway to get them up to standard, so it's better to save the money and spend it on a blacksmith.

Hope this helps you mate, took a while to gather my thoughts for it lol
