Icon1 [RS AAR] Building an Empire: A Roman AAR

Hello readers. I have finally gathered some notes that I think will make a nice story for my first ever AAR. There is some explicit stuff in this AAR, I hope that wouldn't endanger the future of it
I apologize for any mistakes that are bound to be made (grammar and such) as I am not a native English speaker.
Anyway, I hope you like it, so here it goes.

BUILDING AN EMPIRE: A ROMAN AAR

    Prologue: The new era

Gaius nervously waited in the large hall of the villa of the greatest Roman in the Republic, Victor of the Etruscan wars, the consul of the state: Tiberius Maxentius.
The villa was one of the largest in Rome, second only to Cassius's, a fat senator who became rich by screwing with wifes of important patricians or even with some of them. A man with no dignity, but a powerful political figure who was always against Tiberius's propositions with his party in the curia. Cassius had a strong support of patricians and was elected consul in the last elections along with Tiberius, who was rather populist, but belonged to no senate faction. He was elected because of his popularity among the classes, which saw him as the sword of Mars or the hand of Jupiter sent upon the enemies of Rome. And after defeating Etruscans, this all seemed to be real.

Gaius had been summoned by the consul himself for some urgent matters and almost two hours had gone by and he was yet to be called into the house.
He admired Tiberius from the day he saved his mother and him from flames which had been set up by Etruscans and were threatening to trap and devour him and his mother inside a poor plebeian house, had it not been for a young, valiant warrior who came to their aid. From that day on Gaius has been accepted into the Roman army and has been watched by Tiberius, who was slowly, but effectively preparing him for his own ambitions... what ever they were.
A slave suddenly appeared behind him and interrupted his thoughts: "Come centurio, the consul is going to accept you now." He followed the slave into Tiberius' cabinet and was left alone with his general.

After a brief moment of silence consul began speaking: "Twenty years ago I was one of the garrison soldiers in Ferulia. One night the Etruscans launched a sudden attack on the city and set fires which engulfed the trade and military districts and spread on some plebeian houses, one of them being yours."
Gaius didn't know what to say.
Tiberius looked at him and smiled: "I saved you and Plinia that night"
    -"You did, general."
-"Don't be so formal, lad. I didn't marry your mother and made you my son for military talks."
Gaius, now begining to feel more relaxed, smiled at Tiberius, but his father's words didn't change how he was accepted by Tiberius' legitimate children, who were adressing Gaius as a lesser, a bastard.
"Why did you send for me, general?" continuing in the same way.
-"The reason why I've put you into the army is simple: I wanted a warrior son. I wanted a real leader as my heir. My sons can do nothing good for the Republic if they one day became consuls.
I hate to admit this, but my blood has failed me. This is why I want you as my heir, for only you are worthy of the possesions of my ancestors and myself."
Tiberius sipped some wine and drank it quickly, as Gaius have seen him done it so many times before...
He continued: "Gaius, tomorrow I will make you a military tribune in the curia. That will enable you the right to mobilize troops. I will also entrust you with a legion: Legio II. Victoriana and appoint you as general."
Gaius was shocked. He hadn't expected honours like that and wasn't sure if he could manage to fulfil Tiberius' expectations, which were still a mystery to him.
"I am honoured by your trust, general... but don't know if I should rejoice or be worried of what you have in mind."
Tiberius looked at Gaius and nodded: "You are wise to be worried, as I don't know what will happen on the path you will walk. I have just directed you towards the goal I have set for you, the path you will take is up to you."
-"And what is the goal, if I may ask?"
Tiberius suddenly became serious and determined. He looked at the map of the Mediterraneum, then struggled to find Italy due to his poor eyesight caused by an injury he suffered in the war.
"We are finally rid of the Etruscans. The slave has become the master. You see, I don't want to be remembered as one of the leaders of war, or as victor over Etruscans. I want to be the one to make Rome into the capital of the world. I want to make it an empire. I am confident the gods have selected me as their weapon. And now that I have political power in Rome and you as my spear, this can come to be. Together we will begin the new era of the Republic, my son."
-"But you will need the approval of Cassius to launch an expansion war."
-"Don't worry about that idiot. He has screwed one patrician's wife too many, to be able to oppose me."
Gaius saw the uneasines in the old man's eyes and for a moment even helpless anger.
-"Father...? What happened? What did he-?" but he couldn't finish the sentence.
Tiberius was pale with anger. "He raped your mother." he said.

    Chapter I: The begining

Tiberius slowly advanced toward his seat in the curia among his supporters and friends. Rufius and Numerius, both respected generals in the Roman army and senators sat beside him. Rufius started to talk: "So... your boy, Gaius is it? Does he have any experience leading a campaign?
-"None, my friend. That's why I would like you to go with him to war against Calabrians. I want you to teach him in the ways of a general. Make him the best you can." Tiberius answered.
-"If you wish so. But tell me... why don't you go? Why risk loosing a legion when your experience could be vital for the succes of the campaign?
-"I need to take care of something no one else can do, if you know what I'm reffering to."
-"Of course. But you'll have to wait till the end of his mandate. As consul he is untouchable, as are you."
-"Why don't you expose him?" Numerius suddenly asked. He was a tall man and didn't like to complicate things to much. His soldiers have given him nickname "the Bull", because he was the only one in the camp who could please three women on the eve of battle and next day have strenght to kill a manipel of enemy soldiers. Tiberius had no idea what was a man like that doing in the senate, but he really didn't care as Numerius was always giving him the support he needed.
-"I need a puppet for an easy win on votings. His career is usefull for me, for now. But when it won't be..." Tiberius stopped as Cassius entered the curia. He smiled and the other consul nervously smiled back at him. "He's ours." Tiberius finished.

    °°°

Rufius gripped his sword with one hand and with the other took the reins of his horse. The sight of a whole legion exiting Rome was marvelous. Gaius joined him on his horse and they both watched the march of the might of Rome. Manipels of hastati, princeps, triarii, velites and cavalry were heading towards Apulania, an important Roman city on the eastern shore of Italy. From there they would launch an attack on Calabrians and their capital Cannae.
-"I hope you are ready boy. Your father is expecting great things from you - don't disappoint him. You have the power to conquer the whole Italy, remember that. Your father has made Romans into a force to be reckoned with."
Gaius stood still and gazed into his legion. He hadn't been able to sleep the last two nights, since he had that conversation with Tiberius. He wanted to stay in Rome and butcher that son of a who laid hands on his mother. But surely Tiberius would make him pay...
They rode to the front of the marching soldiers and quietly continued their journey.

    °°°

Tiberius received Carthaginian diplomats who were trying to negotiate a truce with Rome. He wanted a ceasefire, but he wasn't going to show that. He was going to make the terms of the treaty, not them.
He was going to show them that Rome doesn't fear anyone, that they don't need to end the war.
-"Greetings, noble Tiberius. My people have sent me to offer a ceasefire with your nation. We have had enough of this war and want to end it, so we could return to our farms and continue living in peace with your people. Our senate believes that this war is futile for both of our nations and believes yours does too.
So let us end this strife and bring peace to our people."
-"I am glad to hear your peace proposal, but there is one thing we demand. The struggle has put its mark on our treasury. We demand you pay us a tribute of 500 talents of silver per year for 3 years. I think you are able to to that. I am not open for negotiations, so this is my final word. Take it or leave it. Peace or war. We certainly can continue it as the Etruscans are no longer involved. So what do you say?"
Carthaginians didn't understand Tiberius' demands. Surely he must've known Carthage could easily pay them at least twice as bigger tribute in one year, but they weren't the ones to question him.
-"We accept your terms. Now if you excuse us, a galley is waiting for us and we'd like to return back to Carthage to deliver the good news." With that said they bowed to Tiberius and went out of the room.

Tiberius waited until their steps couldn't be heard anymore and ordered his guard to let the Syracusian diplomat in.
-"I would like to inform you that I accept your alliance and offer you help against Carthaginians. In ten years time I want your army ready to march on Lilybaeum and your navy support. We will run them back into the sea. You may go tell your leader of this. Jupiter be with you."
-"And Zeus be with you, honourable Tiberius."

Nice to see some interest. I won't be able to post new chapters for some time (will be doing something for school for the next couple of days ), but I have already finished the campaign, so I just need to turn my notes into a story.
So don't expect anything new for at least a week

    Chapter II: Cannae

The sun was just about to iluminate the sky, when orders were shouted for soldiers to break encampment and move towards the city walls.

Cannae was the capital of the city state of Calabrians, a land under constant pressure by the great powers of Italy. Throughout the history many nations tried unsuccesfully to conquer the region, Greeks of Corinth, who founded Syracuse, of Sparta, who founded Tarentum, then not a century ago Dyonysius of Syracuse, called the Tyrant, hadn't been far from conquering it, and now two great powers tried to finally bring it to its knees. Epeiros, the kingdom of the strongest man of Hellas, Pyrrhus, a descendant of Achilles himself. Even Alexander's mother was from Epeiros and Pyrrhus was determined to show that he was worthy of his predecesors.
And in the west lies a young wolf, lying and waiting patiently to attack the unsuspecting prey... That wolf was Rome. Its disciplined armies already destroyed the Etruscans, Campanians and other Italian peoples and the hunger of this beast wasn't going to be satisfied easily. Rome was at the doorstep of Cannae.

Gaius ordered the army into three columns, then moved to his position behind the second one, the column which would attack the gates. Rufius was leading the first column and another centurio, Livius was at the head of the third column, both of them attacking the walls, so that Calabrian troops wouldn't have only one place to defend, but three.
He ordered his troops to move towards the walls and moved velites closer to range and shoot their javelins at their enemies.

Calabrian general Philotas was observing the enemy army, which was twice as big as his and didn't lack discipline, like his was. The strenght of the Calabrians was always in their knowledge of the terrain of the region. This helped them to defeat much more bigger armies and ensure the safety of it. But now, they faced a foe at the gates of their capital city, who had a massive and organized army. He would do anything to be in the place of the Roman general who was leading his enemies.
Soldiers began to advance into the city after the gates were thrown open, and the first clash began. Hastati were holding the ranks as wave after wave of enemy soldiers was slaughtered. Philotas seeing that his militiamen weren't able to stop the advance, ordered his mercenaries into the gap on the right flank of the hastati soldiers.
In vain. Hastati managed to push forward so deep that the veterans, triarii were already begining to do what they have done for thirty plus years... kill.
As two more columns began to push into the city, behind enemy ranks, Philotas ordered his men back into the main city square to try to make a stand there.
Gaius who already lost many men during the struggle against Calabrian mercenaries stopped his men from pursuing the enemy and ordered a slow advance of the entire army into the city. He also ordered the cavalry to march towards the other side of the square so that they would encircle them.

The Roman military machine was slowly advancing infront of their eyes. Calabrians were already wavering, even though the battle wasn't long enough for the entire army to fight it. Children and women were ordered onto the roofs of their homes and given javelins and stones to hit the enemies and cause some damage. But to no effect, as the light militamen of Rome soon cleared the houses and roofs before the advancing army.
Five hundred Calabrians would have to save the city, five hundred against almost an entire legion.
As the soldiers halted, Gaius sent a messenger to Rufius telling him not to hold back and to kill until there is nothing more to kill. Equites came into sight and Gaius ordered the advance.
Trumpets sounded and princeps and hastatii clashed with the mercenaries and hoplites of Cannae. Equites attacked from behind. They were fighting bravely and even managed to open a gap in the Roman troops. Gaius and his guard was fighting close to the centre, Philotas observed and began to clear his path towards him. Soon the two generals were looking at each other and the battle seemed so distant...
At the sight of his foe, Gaius was shocked. He couldn't lift the sword to attack, and Philotas neither. He knew that face... but his memory wasn't able to remember who that man was.
At a blink of an eye, Philotas was gone out of sight. He had been struck down by a Roman javelin and was carried away by his men. The Calabrian army was quickly disappearing under the mass of Roman troops, but around half a dozen of them managed to escape with injured Philotas and rode out of the city.
When they reached the hill overlooking Cannae, Philotas ordered his men to halt and let him take one last look at his city. In that moment the victory cry of Romans was heard and he knew that he would never see his city free again.

    °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°

Ok, so I have finally created the new chapter. I didn't mean to "save" Philotas in this battle, but when I was writting the square clash, I thought why not do something unexpected? And I got an idea
Since I know how will the AAR end, I am free to do whatever I want, even though I'm still not sure what will that be
I'll try to make a new chapter soon, though I might not have the time this week (school ya know ).
