    Default Modding Alexander problem.

Hi, I been messin around with Alexander adding in more units and factions from RTW and BI mods just to experiment, on to the campaign map and custom battles with a reasonable degree of success, until for some reason after getting some units from BI just regular cavalry and infantry units I get a CTD without fail for both custom battles and the campaign map. This happened once before so I got rid of everything I'd added since I encountered the problem which worked before, but no such look this time. Both DMB and EDU seem typo free but I've got a feelin it something to to with the general models, I aint really figured that bit out yet.

Pretty vague I know, Ive checked the CTD guides but there dosent seem to be anything like that causing the problem but i might be wrong. I get no error message and the loading bar gets between 3/4 and the end of loading before it CTD's. Wondering if theres anything specifically different with Alexander to RTW/BI.
    cheers.

You'll have to look for it but there is a hardcoded limt on units in the EDU. There will be no error message, just a ctd. Make sure you haven't hit it.

hmm nah I only got about 170 entries in it im guessin the limit hasn't been decreased from RTW, but there got to be something in either EDU of DMB that causing the problem. If you change the culture of a faction from 'barbarian' to 'greek' in Descr_sm_factions does the default General model change with it, in which case I'd have to assign a skin in DMB aswell?

Its the only thing i can think could be causing the trouble, it has to be something that prevents both the custom battles and the campaign map from actually loading at all, which rules out anything from descr_strat n all that game, I got rid of the new things i added since i copped this CTD but its still happenin, I must of changed something pretty essential, but i can't think what, cheers anyway.

Descr_strat? delete the map.rwm and start a new campaign.

I deleted the map.rwm but it still crashes back to the desktop with a new one being generated, I got the show-err command on but this CTD dose'nt generate an error message. Does RTW have an error log file like MTII?

Did you backup your original files before you started modding? It should be easy enough to put them back in. All else fail reinstall the game, and then mod them one at a time, making backups for each successful addition.

Cheers mate, I got custom battles working again even with the additional files, I had to reinstall, but it looks like the problem had something to do with the character name files, which is pretty strange because when the problem first developed I hadn't made anymore changes to these files, and the changes i had made were working fine in both custom battle and campaign. The campaign map still CTD's around 3/4 of the way through loading, and if I make any changes to the name files at all now then Custom battles start crashing again aswell. I got no idea whats the matter with it cause I havent changed anything to do with the campain map itself other than reposition and add a few armies here and there. Its a bit of a tricky one this and a bit beyond me I think, cheers for the help.

Is there anyway of having an error log written like those in MTWII? Its giving me no indication of what might be wrong at all that seems like the only way.

I'm moving this thread to the modding forum as this clearly is a modding problem and not one with the game......

I think that probably you deleted or edited one unit present in descr_rebel_factions.

Cheers, Turned out the problem was with the name files, for some reason descr_names had picked up a few duplicate name entries from somewhere, must just have been me messing up a bit of pasting somewhere along the line but problem solved. Sorry really was somethin ridiculously simple in the end, cheers for the help anyways.
