Default Model/skin request - some small vessels for mods that may need them (mine included)

    Hi,

I'm currently working on a Pirate mod, and one thing that pirates used was small vessels such as sloops and schooners. The pirates currently mainly have mainly ship rigged vessels and larger, and i'd like to rectify that.
What I propose is firstly some simple swaps of ships rigging to turn a few into different classes of vessel, and secondly if possible to modify some of the hulls to make some very different types.
Sadly, I have no modelling experience or the software to do it, so i'd like to request some help doing this (i.e do the model and re-texture and i'd include it in my mod + make available for other modders).
I think a few other mods could make use of these as well, so thye may come in handy all round.
What i'm Thinking is, for the simple ones:
    Polacca

An odd vessel, the polacca came in many hull shapes and sizes. They were common in the mediteranean, and were used as cargo vessels and warships. The most notable feature is the lateen rig on the formast with a square rig on the main and mizzen:

What I suggest for the modelling is is to simply take the lateen formast from the xebec and out it on the pirate race built galleon. I think it's the easiest to do, and the one i'd most like to see. In other mods it should be given to all of the christian mediteranean nations.

    Sloop

I know this is in the game already, but the vessel in the game is not a sloop at all, rather a ketch. I won't accept it's a sloop of war either, beacuse if that were so a brig would be too. Besides, the royal navy were the only navy to use the "sloop of war" nomenclature, everyon else used "corvette".
For the mod, take the sloop hull and remove that damned mizzen mast. Enlarging the gaff sail on the mainmast would be a good idea too.

    Schooner

A favourite amongst pirates, smugglers and HM customs, the schooner was and still is a very fast vessel. Sadly, nothing in the game exists like it at the moment, so it would have to be modeeled from scratch:

    Brigantine

A variant on the brig, the brigantine (or Hermaphrodite Brig) carries a fore-and aft rig on the mainmast, to make it handier sailing tino the wind. Should be quite simple again, just remove the square sails on the mainmast and add a gaff/staysail:

Cheers for reading, any help greatly appreciated,

I dream of a day when we amass all these fantastic ideas into a Stainless Steel Ubermod for Empire.

...say! could call it "Burnished Brass"!

For the moment there are three main problems with your modding idea:
    1. we don't have an exporter / importer to work on the models or the rigg. Someone make it possible to export parts of the models to X, so you can watch them with an x-view, but no reimport into the game, till CA gives us one or someone manage to write his own.
    2. The rigging is in a complete different format than the hull. there are xml-files, which seem to cover the informations. this leads me to having 4 or 5 files for each ship-model. To make models from the scratch or big changes to the rigging will be a long way to go, even if we have the converter
    3. The size of such a mod will be a problem. I just mess around with the textures (though this includes the whole hull & damage model, as they are implemented in it) and get for 10 textures for 19 ships about 1.5 GB, so i look for reducing the numbers to make it possible to DL it.
Generally you are right with not enough ships in the game. even for the rated ships we have little to choose from. Looking at the unrated ships, there are very few in the game.

Ah well, lets hope they release the relevant software soon then, and theres a simpler way of doing it.
Cheers for your advice, let us know if you have any bright ideas on it.
    Cheers,

Chnaging textures is possible. Also to do it just for some nations or for all nations different (not just changing the actual dds-files). The main problem atm is: you need to do it by Hex-editing and you are limited to the textures. Personally i work on such a mod, which should remove faction colors (might look courious on some ships with specific textures to have non fitting faction colors) and add ships with new textures. If implemented, a change is again quite easy, as this would just mean to change the texture files (all those, that have different names from the original, which are mainly hull and damage texture for what i'm doing). It's quite time extensiv work as you need to check it in game quite often. a small mistake will crash the mod or the whole game, so by integrating too much changes, you will not know where the problem is and just searching through the files is nearly impossible, because of their size.

I think it could be possible to make changes to the rigging too, by editing the xml-files, but no idea, how that works in detail, so personally i would be limited to change textures there. integrate those in game would run.

I've found at least one little thing we can for the Greeks:

I think a simple xebec retexture should sort that.
    Philhellene mod anyone?

Kaptan Pasha (Ottoman Turkish: کاپیتان پاشا Kaptan Pasha) or کاپیتان دریا Kaptan-ı Derya (literally Captain of the Sea) were the titles given to the chief commander of the navy in the Ottoman Empire.
The title Kaptan-ı Derya was first granted during the reign of Bayezid I (the Thunderbolt) as an official rank within the state structure. Starting with the reign of Mehmed II (the Conqueror), holders of the rank were accorded the status of viziers and held the title of Pasha, thus they were more often called Kaptan Pasha. A total of 161 Kaptan-ı Derya/Kaptan Pasha served in the vizieral office until 1867 when an Ottoman Naval Ministry was founded. The supreme commanders of the Ottoman Navy that followed were thus ministers (Bahriye Nazırı), until a further re-structuring in 1897.
