A lot depends upon what you want to see in-game. When I had an older system paying RTW games I decided to have 'epic' battles so I had unit size on high and everything else turned down.

Some players like to see a mixture of things so they will try and set the levels to medium.

I presume ETW runs in a similar manner to previous TW games - turn down grass, trees and shadows first.

Shadows seem to be the biggest setting that I can live without to improve my framerate. With the shadows turned off I can run everything on Ultra.

The other thing that really affects framerate is unit size. A lot of people (including myself) like to keep the unit sizes at Large or Ultra. If it doesnt really bother you, you can turn them to medium and probably turn the rest of the settings up a bit.
