Maybe we can work with the French, the British, the Russians, the Dutch, the Filipinos, the Yemenis, the Danish, the Aussies, the Greeks and the Chinese on this.

Personally I think we should build up Puntland first, proved economic aid in exchange for help in fighting piracy and Allied operations on land. Then using Puntland as an example spread it through areas where they will gain aid in exchange for helping against pirates and recognizing the TFG. Thus creating a government in Somalia and killing pirates at the same time.

I think somalia has too many factions to even think about putting into place a coalition government or having some kind of foreign rule...the only solution for somalia is unfortunately for someone brutal enough on their end to put an end to the anarchic nonsense and hoping they're receptive to the rest of the world.

Peersonally I think it could be argued for Somalia to become a confederation.

The idea sounds quite good Farnan - especially as the new President of Puntland seems to be a guy that the international community could work with and he seems to have a strong support base in the area.

A strong government with international and local backing does need to be brought to Somalia as a whole though, as the place at the moment is a "backwater", where crime is strong and the people are suffering terribly due to lack of aid.

Only problem is we need to bring the fight to land if we want to solve it, but unless there is a stable government we can't permanently solve the problem.

What he said is true. This isn't just a Somalian problem. The pirate's base of operation are ships, looking like large fishing boats. The small vessels used to board are aboard these ships. Most of the supplies aren't coming from Somalia, they use a large range of different ports to get them. Their operations are quite sophisticated since they seem to know exactly what ships to attack, what they are carrying, what routes they're taking etc. This hole pirate-biz has become quite lucrative and others have joined in. Somalia is only used to recruit the 'laborers', the big money is going somewhere else.

I was wondering the same thing. I remember in the lead up to the first Gulf War that the convoy system was used. It might be that 5th Fleet just doesnt have the ships right now but other navies could pitch in.

I think leveling that place would put a lil hitch in their giddyup. I'm all for gunboat diplomacy and damn the consequences.

I do also agree with Farnan that a government and stability is the only way to sort this mess out. Unfortunately the islamists in the south will stand for nothing less then an islamic republic and since most of the west is convinced they are allied with Al Qaeda they will never work with them. Therefore Somalia as a whole can't be saved but maybe Puntland can be.
