Not sure about this.
Thief was one of the best game series ever(yes even with Thief III).
However I feel that they will probably miss the point of what made the series great if they do make it.
Still if they do get it right then the nerd in me is jumping from joy with the thought of a proper thief game with modern graphics and physics can do.
Not to mention being my favorite anti-hero Garrett again.

They'd have to either use a different character or else make it a prequel (like Deus Ex 3), since Garrett is no longer in the business.

What I always liked best about Thief games was knocking people out cold and then murdering them in cruel ways while they were helpless. In Thief 2 I used to bypass the Expert difficulty setting's prohibition on killing by chucking them under water - streams, a well, the sea in the warehouse level where the smuggling ship is moored, etc. - and then waiting until they drowned. I would savour every gagging noise. I'd walk all the way back across the level map to get to a source of water, if necessary. Heh heh.

I can't see it being any other game then Thief 4, last year Edios were advertising for programmers to work on a project starting with the letter 'T' and this news and the fact we haven't had a new Thief game since 2004 plus the franchises loyal fan base it all adds up to new game.

I'm more nervous about this game than any other in development.

Given DE3 looks great so far, things look up, but I really hope they avoid any sort of "reboot" nonsense.

Drownings were always fun. I usually went for ovens/fireplaces when available. But really, anything was fun. Ever just beat someone with the blackjack until they actually died? That was always fun too

Yes, there's no feeling quite like playing a game where alternatives to violence via stealth and skill are supposed to be the key to success and then perverting it by killing as many people as possible as brutally as you can. I remember when I played Splinter Cell 1 through, I always made sure to execute everyone I ever knocked out cold with a headshot as they lay helpless on the floor. It's best to be sure, you see.

I reckon Stalin's Ghost was constantly pressing refresh on his browser at the Edios Montreal website all morning trying to the first on find out.

I think just about everybody knew it was going to be Thief 4 I'm just glad they have finally made it official. I thought work on this started last year? I'm a bit worried that Edios might shut down Edios Montreal before this project gets out of it's infancy given the current financial crisis but I guess that's me just being pessimistic.

I hope they return to the level design of Thief 2, while I enjoyed Thief 3 I just felt that the levels were too small and weren't as satisfying as the previous two games.
