    Default Reinforcement

I'm sure if this is earth-shattering and I'm not even sure if it's mentioned here already, but here's something I discovered yesterday

It so happens that I have two stack of army near each other when an enemy attacked me. The usual prompt appeared, showing the three armies. I quickly unchecked the reinforcements because, by experience, the general of the reinforcing army tends to be suicidal and just go all out, destroying my plans and maneuvers. But what do you know, when the battle commenced, the card for the reinforcing units were present, albeit a little foggy (if that's the term). And if you hover your cursor, it says they're waiting for battle. And the nice thing is that you can choose which unit to use. I was really happy because they just arrived in time to outflank my opponent.

I don't know if this helps, but it sure was fun if you can control your reinforcements

Controlling reinforcements limits the number of on map units to 20. But you are correct in all that you observed. A good topic for discussion. Let's see what the others have to say on this.

There's nothing more annoying than having AI-led reinforcements that have got their greedy little mitts on some artillery! They don't care that the flaming rocks are ripping into your own troops as much as the enemy's ¬.¬

I would say always check the box to lead them yourself if you think you'll need them, otherwise aim to finish the battle before they can arrive and mess things up ^_^

I agree but I normally only use reinforcements if I want to auto resolve. The AI is so bad that it's better to have them to bolster you battered ranks than to have them do whatever they feel like and ruining your battle plans.

If there are more than 2o units they cannot enter the battle unless you completely lose a unit. Of course the AI can command all of them.
The Charge of the Light Brigade was a disastrous charge of British cavalry led by Lord Cardigan against Russian forces during the Battle of Balaclava on 25 October 1854 in the Crimean War.

The 20-unit-limit for human-controlled units makes controlling your reinforcements in large battle a bad idea. I usually split my armies in one stack with the high quality experienced troops including the General(s), and put the cannon fodder in the other stack(s), to be controlled by the AI. Then I set them on aggressive behaviour, and voila, you've got a nice diversion (and high casualties...).
"The cheapest form of pride however is national pride. For it reveals in the one thus afflicted the lack of individual qualities of which he could be proud, while he would not otherwise reach for what he shares with so many millions. He who possesses significant personal merits will rather recognise the defects of his own nation, as he has them constantly before his eyes, most clearly. But that poor blighter who has nothing in the world of which he can be proud, latches onto the last means of being proud, the nation to which he belongs to. Thus he recovers and is now in gratitude ready to defend with hands and feet all errors and follies which are its own."-- Arthur Schopenhauer

How do you set reinforcements' behaviour?

I think it's a feature of the Kingdoms expansion only (but available in MTWII Grand Campaign too, if you have installed Kingdoms). When you have AI controlled reinforcements, in the upper right corner of the display during battle, you see several icons which allow you to set the AI behaviour, eg. to offensive or defensive. I'm not sure it makes a huge difference, though, the AI being as dumb as it is.

I knew about that, but I did not know you could choose which units to enter the battle.

If both you and your enemies have reinforcements, you could use your first army to deal with their first army, and then withdraw - letting battle commence once more!
