Is it me or do wars drastically crash your economy

Lower economic growth as well, unit upkeep as you build more units, etc...

its not just you, often when you fight a war you build lots of units up, not only spending the initial recruitment cost but the continued cost of upkeep. this taxes your economy. adding weight is the fact that your trade-lanes, and towns are often raided, decreasing income even further.

Wars are an expensive luxury for countries. It makes sense that what with the destruction of areas, and with the costs of war, you would garner less money per turn.

i think the upkeep is doubled or sotrmhing in forgien territory and tripled in enemy territory but thats jsut my guess, its realistic tho.

I can't honestly see how sending all your intellegent, rich bankers away to become officers and get killed 5 minutes into battle is going to improve your economy.

7 years war nearly bankrupted Great Britain even though it won conclusively. You know the rest......

So guess it's fair fighting wars directly is something you have to plan for and then recover from!

Wasn't there a quote in MTW II to this effect, "To engage in War three things are needed... money, money, and yet more money." HAHAHA, great quote if you ask me.

I think I heard something somewhere that at the height of WWII, the US was spending something like 42% of it's GDP towards the war.... that's a lot o' money!!!

The more you depend on trade, the more economies suck in wartime, especially against maritime nations. I was once playing as the Americans and went from 60K a turn to 6K in ONE turn when I went to war with Britain. Needless to say, I did what I needed to do in that war and then got out quickly.
