Overclocking AMD quad Q9850 CPU help?
Hey everyone
I dont know how to overclock my processor and I know that it can be done as it is a special Black Edition Q9950 that is designed to be overclocked. Any ideas as to whether this will increase performance? Or step by step on how to do this?
thanks

Well, first of all, I think its Intel not AMD that made that cpu. Well, overclocking is a quite huge undertaking, and instead of making us write entire tutorials just for you, i recommend that you search the net for some of the many tutorials already out there. I can also hear that you have never overclocked before, as you dont even mention any of your hardware components beside the cpu. But here's some things you should have before starting to overclock;
Good overclock friendly motherboard and ram. Especially good cooling on the chipset is required if you want the best performance.
A good heatsink on your cpu, the stock cooler shipped from Intel is not good enough.
Good airflow, to remove the extra heat
A powerfull powersupply

Re: Overclocking AMD quad Q9850 CPU help?
The main question I ask is.. Will overclocking a quadcore AMD 9850 black edition currently at 2.6 increase ETW perfermance considering it only utilises one or two of my cores.
Due to a recent overheating problem ive just put in a new cooling system with an air extractor over the CPU so I know it can be done. Im going to look into using Ntune to do this.
Specs are:
Nvidia GTX260 896mb superoverclocked core clock of 630mhz (576mhz standard)
4GB of corsair xms2 running at 800mhz
A western digital hard drive 7200RPM
Gigabyte GA-MA770 DS3 motherboard
and the above processor

ntune will overclock your graphic cad, not your CPU. For instructions on overclocking, you can search in a lot of sites, including http://www.ocforums.com/
Itīs quite dangerous if you donīt know what you are doing, which seems to be the case (no offense intended), but if you take your time to get all the info and try to be careful about it youīll be OK. But get all the info first please, if you just trample onto it you could damage your CPU
Will you gain performance? Yes, but donīt expect 20fps increase or something. it will just be a little better, as your CPU might be bottlenecking your GPU. Donīt bother trying to get more than 3,6 or 3,8 for gaming, you wonīt get much gain after that.
Happy overclocking

Re: Overclocking AMD quad Q9850 CPU help?
with overclocking you can never have too much information and you need plenty of patience if you want to get stability so small steps and test test test. dont expect it to drastically up your games performance as there are many factors such as gpu and bottlenecks when you run a game but you might get a few more fps
intel stock heatsinks can handle a small overclock and tbh thats the best way for you to start as you are a novice, here are a couple of links to start you off but u should really try search for your mb and cpu to try find a more specific guide
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1198647
http://forums.techpowerup.com/forumdisplay.php?f=13
read those and remember heat is your biggest enemy, be patient and i am sure you will succeed easy enough

Re: Overclocking AMD quad Q9850 CPU help?
Funny it said Q9850 in the title.
Then Q9950 in the topic.
Then in the reply Q9850
And AMD made the Phenom 9950 / 9850, I think he got confused and added a Q for Quad.
Just increase the multiplier (1 step at a time and bench/test it & check temps!!!!) as its unlocked on your processor download AMD OVERDRIVE, dont touch anything other than the multiplier, and you should also run some Stress tests (theres a couple in the amd overdrive tool) you can find it at amd.com
