Default GM told to prep for bankruptcy filing

WASHINGTON, April 12 (Reuters ) – The U.S. Treasury Department is directing General Motors to lay the groundwork for a bankruptcy filing by June 1, even though the automaker has publicly stated it could reorganize outside of court, The New York Times reported on Sunday.
GM is operating under emergency U.S. government loans. It has been told by the Obama administration's task force overseeing its bailout that it must cut costs and reduce its debts in order to continue to receive aid.

Those who supported Reagen's, Bush sr., Clinton's, and Bush jr., deregulation moves are going to royally pissed over the government newest moves in regulating these companies.

Well Saab is pretty much gone unless someone will buy them they will disappear. A good thing is that the Swedish government hasn't used any money to try and save Saab. While some jobs will be lost there isn't really any use for Saab they haven't been making profits in ten years and who wants a sinking ship?

Let them fail. These companies need to pay the price for their unscrupulous actions. Other companies will rise.

There are a number of companies that, for example, supply parts and such in the construction of GM vehicles who do the same for other automakers (not just US automakers like Ford and Chrysler). GM failing would cause significant damage (or even failure is possible in some cases) to those companies and would in turn hurt the other automakers who rely on them for parts, etc. This is not a good thing, and it sure as hell isn't something you want to be celebrating or looking forward to in any way.

Edit: A quick Google search article from 11/2008 about this: http://www.leftlanenews.com/gm-colla...s-economy.html

General Motors is facing the most serious financial crisis of its 100 year existence, with bankruptcy looking like a very real risk. Although there is talk of a bailout package in Washington, nothing has come to fruition yet, leaving GM on life support with only enough cash on hand to survive until mid-2009. There is no question that a Chapter 11 filing would be detrimental to GM and its employees, but the failure of the nation’s largest automaker would spell disaster for the U.S. economy.

According to Automotive News, the failure of GM – or any other member of the Big Three – would send a domino effect through the industry, bringing down dealers, suppliers and even foreign automakers.

Because automakers and suppliers are so intertwined, the failure of one car maker has the potential to bring down several suppliers. In turn, those bankrupt suppliers would interrupt Ford and Chrysler’s supply lines, which would likely be enough to topple the already crippled automakers.

The suppliers that would be left after the fall out would struggle to supply the foreign automakers that have factories in North America, meaning companies like Honda and Toyota could face some very dire straits.

“If GM goes down, it will take down companies like Lear and Johnson Controls,” Wolkonowicz says. “That will shut Ford down, and it would shut down production at Toyota and Honda,” John Wolkonowicz, an analyst for Global Insight, told Automotive News. “They would go down like dominoes.”

Outside of the auto industry, the collapse of one or two of the Detroit automakers would have a tremendous impact on the U.S. economy as a whole. According to a new study by the Center for Automotive Research, the failure of one or two of the domestic automakers would results in the loss of 240,000 automaker jobs, 795,000 supplier jobs and 1.4 million related jobs.

President-elect Barack Obama has pledged to make the ailing auto industry his top priority, but it remains to be seen if the government can move fast enough to save the industry and the economy.

Such is the process of creative destruction, in the end the economy will come out stronger for it. Resources will be put to better use, consumer demand will be more adequately met... etc.

Anyways I doubt an article from a site called leftlanenews can provide good overview, the article is riddled with Keynesian short sightedness.

Ford is not next, they are in a good enough of a position to probably make it through this. Chrysler and Fiat are dead if they do not merge, which they are doing.

    Yeah Ford is doing decently...

Although my uncle worked for Ford Credit for the last 20 years and just got laid off like a month ago, which sucks for our family but it shows how Ford is evolving. The reason Ford is doing decently is because they had huge cash reserves which will sustain them through this anemic period.

Also they are quick to adapt to the changing markets, so expect Ford to be the leading America automaker real soon.

Chrysler and Fiat are two of the weakest car manufacturers out there - I think a merger will only prolong their pain and send more money down the tubes.

Let them go. It's time for a new company to emerge that's not weighed down by the ridiculous demands of the unions.

Maybe Tucker or DeLorean will come back?
