how do you install a mod in your edition of ETw

Hi Guys
I am sorry if this appears to be a stupid question but having read the posts in this section of the forums I would like to try the campaign game with one of the mods which all the clever chaps have spent a lot of time making.

What i do not know how to do is install it so I can play the game after downloading.
I have got a bit confused reading about mod manger and compatibilty conflicts and having to decide the ordr the patches have to load in.
My only other experience of applying a mod to a game was in Civ4 Colonisation and there you get a menu item when the game loads asking if you want to run the mod or not.

I do not want to alter my main game but want to be able to play the campagin using a mod or not as the case may be.

I am sorry if this seems a bit naive but I do not know how to program and do not want to make the main game any more susceptible to crashes then it already is.
I apologise if I have posted this in the wrong section of the forum but I thought it should be here although it is not a post about developement of a mod.

It is difficult enough for a novice to find the directory to delete the saved games let alone putting files in specific places and inserting a "script" line to make the mod run.

Thank you for replying I had read this thread.
But it was really a more basic answer I was looking for in as to were do you put the files how do you get the mod to load etc.

The nice thing about the mod system in ETW is that it doesn't permanently alter the game files.

Unzip the mod .pack file to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war\data

If you're only running a few mods, you can probably skip the Mod Manager and do it the old fashioned way: type "mod [the mod name].pack;" (no quotation marks and fill in the bracket) in user.empire_script.txt. There's a drop down menu below the area where you type in the file name. Click on it and save as Unicode. That's it, you're done. If you don't want to run the mod, just delete the line.

If you don't see the script file there, create it. Open Word, notepad or wordpad and type in the line above. Save as "user.empire_script.txt" (no quotation marks) in Unicode.

Create or edit the script here:

C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts

XP
C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts


You might want to create a short cut to the script and the data folder so you can find them immediately from your desktop. Right click on the data folder icon and select "send to desktop". Do the same for the script file.

I know I wasn't explicit, but I hope it's obvious that you don't include the brackets in the script. Anyway, good luck.

As for Steinig's very helpful comment... do allow for the fact that many newbs make at least a reasonable effort to investigate these things but often enough the answer just doesn't pop up like a gleaming light from the heavens. It may take 30 minutes to search for and find or 3 minutes to ask. But most importantly thank you for the link. I will submit to being your protectorate now.
