... so tear the universities down! I'm around 1750 and in the horizon is the moment when I will have discovered everything. I'm thinking of tearing the universities down once I reach that point, but it seems something so uncivilized to do!
Maybe research should be made a little more difficult, so in a typical game you would still be researching stuff towards the end. And universities don't become obsolete! There are things that seem out of place in the mid-18th century like steam engines. Although basic steamships existed towards the end of that century, steam warships were not used until around 1850.
I was also thinking of closing the seminaries once the region is 100% of my religion, but at this point I have so much money there's no need. I'll keep them just for variety and their marginal effect on happiness. I would like to keep the universities for the same reason (and for the prestige, although I also have tons of that), but they are harmful. Pity.
