But you can't have more than one army in the battle. I wonder why if they had already "discovered" that for M2TW, why couldn't they apply it to ETW. (The AI seems able to have more than one army in the battle though...)

Any reinforcements for a battle to appear have to be within your army's zone of control. There is a current issue with deployment where actual start positions are bugged depending on the battle type. Often your start position is actually reversed and enemy reinforcements will come in from behind you while your reinforcements will come in opposite as well.

You also can never control more than one army at a time and reinforcements will filter in one unit at a time as your units are needed. Meaning if you attack with two full stacks, the second stack will only appear when a unit of your first stack fully routs or retreats from the field of battle. Not true of the AI (which is a load of bollocks IMHO)

That is unless your reinforcements are coming from an Ally, in which case they will deploy much like you and attack or defend at the same time. But again, there is an issue with deployment so often their position is screwed compared to yours. You also never get to see this deployment location before you deploy yours often leading to situations where you are totally disengaged from the entire battle.

I've gotten to the point where unless Im testing ZoC to further pin down the mechanics, I just autoresolve any and all reinforcement battles.

No news to most of you, but the placement of reinforcements is definitely bugged. Just now I attacked two full stacks of Spaniards that were both in front of me on the campaign map. Their main force was directly in front of me at 12:00 of course, but their reinforcements entered at 6:00. Frustrating. Tiring for my cavalry as well!

One thing I've started doing and noticed that it has a good effect. I bring a small stack of cavalry with my big stack, so whenever I get reinforcements, I can bring in cavalry to the rear of the enemy or I can doubletime it to my lines in case that doesn't seem feasible tactically. I HATE having a general and artillery coming into the screen behind their lines and their cavalry hitting it before I can get the cannons set up.

I try not to use them as they always tend to show up behind the enemy. Really bad when the enemy ends up behind you.
