Icon5 Is there a way to "un-update" the last patch? Because it TOTALLY MURDERED ME.

I'm in the following situation: when the game first got out, I had no crashes at all. Which was cool, considering that my system is barely within the min specs.

After the first or second patch, mixups with sound started. After a couple more, I started having (relatively rare) crashes.

After the last patch, I can't start a new grand campaign. Apparently I can load my saved campaign, and play custom battles, but not start a new one. This is officially nasty. (I-should-give-up-videogames-and-go-out-more nasty). I don't think I have to explain why I would like to be able to start a new GC.

My first thought was to "uninstall" the last patch. I have the steam version however (now we know how great that was ), and that doesn't seem to be an option. I even uninstalled the whole game and reinstalled it, but you either do the whole thing or not (if you tick off the "update automatically" the download stops).

I remember reading someplace the someone had backup-ed some files, which effectively allowed him to "uninstall" the patch. Unfortunately, I haven't done that before the patches (and I wouldn't know which files these are anyway).

So, the question is, does anyone have any advice/links on possible ways to revert to the state before the last patch (or ideally before any patch) for the steam version of the game?

    Please? Anyone?... I'm dying here...

Edit: I wasn't using any mods at all.

if you where to uninstall and reinstall you could. and turn off auto updates. the problem is it will install the latest update once you reinstall (unless you turn off auto updates) you cant pick which ones to install sadly.

I tried that... While downloading the game to reinstall it, I ticked off auto update, and it stopped downloading. It wouldn't start until I tcked auto update back on (I only waited 3-5 minutes, not more).

Are you saying that it can work? Maybe if I just left it alone long enough it would resume downloading? Have you actually done that -- if so, can you explain in a little more detail?

(Not to be an ass or anything, but as I say 2 times in the OP, including in the one sentence in bold) I have a steam version of the game.

I didnīt tried that, but if you wanna go back to vanilla you probably could rename the patch.pack in order to prevent it from loading.....

    @ Steinig

Just tried it.. took patch.pack and patch_en.pack out. Don't know if it's vanilla or not, but I couldn't start a campaign...

well another thought, make your own patch pack with pack manager and just put in the stuff from main pack

I backed up the whole data file once I downloaded from Steam. Not sure why I did that but I did anyways.

I have not downloaded the March 30 patch as I was getting tired of the fact that these patches were screwing things up (i.e sound).

There are four files that were changed with the patches up to and including March 26

    Patch
    Patch_en
    mss32.dll
    empire.exe

The last two files I did not back up and part of the problem with sound still persists so I think you need all four.

My only suggestion is to search for those files on the net. Maybe someone posted them as they cannot do it here.

When you download a game from steam it will automatically be the latest updated version. I had a similar problem with Half Life 2 episode 2 once, I couldn't play it after an update and it was no use downloading it again because it was the same, no way to get around it.

Good luck with that. Its kinda scary for me too... Empire is working beautifuly now (no visual/audio bugs nor CTDs). I hope it'll stay that way.

I don't suppose you know anyone with the CD version of the game?

I bought the CD as a birthday present for a close friend who is also a TW veteran. And I remember making fun of him for not wanting to go to steam...

(Trouble is, he is a few thousand miles away right now, so I can't benefit from that...)

Another reason why Steam-Only is a BAD idea, contrary to their propaganda that it was great for the Player.
