    Default Solid shot

Sometimes it works okay against cavalry, but is there any advantage to using solid shot? I mean really, in almost every war movie I've seen in this time period, solid shot was used, what is the advantage? When I get a direct hit on an infantry line, only like two or three get killed as opposed to up to like 15 with other shot types.

The primary advantages of solid shot are that it continues to travel after it hits, which can under certain (rare) circumstances do a lot of damage to an enemy formation, and that it requires no technology advance to use.

Other than that, switch over to more useful shot(s) when they become available.

That and when you are in a siege, they are more useful taking down walls.

If you aim ahead of the enemy formation you can skip the solid shot through the formation. However this doesn't always work if its raining or the ground is inclined
Also it gives your early gun crews something to do until the enemy gets within canister range.

I had 3/4s enemy infantry in rectang formation destroyed with solid shot, but I considered it to be a lucky shot, since I could't repeat it intentionally.

solid shot is relatively effective against buildings, which the AI likes to hide in.

it also tends to be more precise than other shots (equal to percussion) because others will attempt to spread out (quicklime) while others might explode too early in middair (exploding).

Not to mention it's the only shot you can use at long range with cannon until Shrapnel

But yes, it is deadly effective against cavalry, or infantry if they're 90 degrees from your cannon. I had one unfortunate incident where I turned my militia to face an incoming unit, and my cannon fired at a unit of cavalry that was running to the right flank of my unit of militia.

I lost a third of the unit it took out the entire first line. Was pretty spectacular with the smoke and blood mod though.

Its a good shot in the beginning, long range with solid and short range with canister. But once you go to explosives shots, stick with them. They are much more usefull then the solid one.

Artillery was in the early days not so effective and the bouncing shot was the solution to make early artillery more effective on the new battlefields outside the urban area's. Imagine marching towards the enemy and 20 cannons are shooting bouncing solid shot through your ranks. It would have bin a shower of bodyparts and blood from your comrades. Inexperienced troops just needed maby one extra musket volley to scatter.

It was Napoleon came up with the idea of forming artillery batteries on a massive scale. They where used on the apparantly weak spot in the enemy line. If opened up the infantery and cavelry where able to exploit the gap!!! So its historically correct me think.

With the changes I have made to artillery, cannons and roundshot are more useful than before.

Watch for my next update - cannon range based on projectile size and far more accurate cannons, so you can use roundshot to destroy your enemy's artillery or even torment the enemy general. With the increased range, no more camping and waiting, the AI will force you or him into action through artillery.

Its not so accurate.Suprisingly i am lucky enough to kill enemy generals at a distance although i ve noticed their morale isnt affected so much.In medieval only killing the enemy general meant i could smoke a cigarette during the rest of the battle.

BTY imagine being on the battlefield and seeing a great ball jumping on your line.I would prefer having my officer execute me than this

For some real fun with solid shot, play with something like DarthMod Commander edition, where cavalry units have 120-200 people in them. Watching a ball bounce through a unit and cleave a row of dead bodies is awesome.

I play with my artillery ranges set to 800 for solid shot, 600 for shrapnel, and 250 for canister. With those settings (and larger unit sizes) solid shot definitely has a purpose hitting cavalry or large formations at long range.
