I've been playing a Sweden campaign and researched square formation. Now I expected my line infantry to be able to use this formation, the button is there but I can't press it. Anyone know what is wrong here?

Damn, hoped it was just a Sweden bug. Oh well, hopefully we will get an answer from someone who has gotten it to work.

Are you playing on tiny unit sizes or have you modded the game to have extra-large unit sizes? There's an upper limit to the amount of men that can form square, and the minimum is 40, I believe.
