I love the mod so far after trying EB for a while. But what I noticed as playing as the Romans I get raped early into the game. Im talking about less than 20 turns into it. Almost every faction decides to attack me and take my cities.

Well you should start reading some of the threads that float around here.
For factions that will attack you are Gauls, Greeks and Carthage early in to the game. The senate faction will attack you if you get stuck in there territory so watch out for this. Germans will attack you when you have a settlement bordering one of there' s so don' t take Patavium or Darantasia to early in the game.
Having a lot of factions attacking you makes the game such a fun game to play, it is a real challenge to keep them out of your empire. So create enough legions to do so.

This mod was designed to be played as the romans, so the experience has to be unique. It's supposed to replicate the difficulty of building the Roman empire.
There are a couple guides that you can look into:
Scroll down to #5, there's a list of guides to surviving the start of the game. The link also has helpful hints so look around some.

if you ever find the time to search through the tactics thread there are some nice formations by a few people, sulla to name one of em, might be worth it to take a look there.
but yea i know what you mean sometimes i gotta sit in my chair and think if i want to play SPQRbut once i start i usally dont end up stopping.

What I usually do for my stacks is Increase the Hesiti to 7 units and the Triari to 4 and get rid of a slinger unit or somthing along those lines.
My problem is that they usually always attack a city with a full stack then a overwhelming army with spartans....*sigh* my feelings are hurt so bad right now lol
This was my first reaction as well when i started to play this mod but slingers are actually very useful if you use them on the flanks thy will kill a lot of spartans if you use them wise.

welcome to the game
SPQR has got a well establised reputation around twcenter as being the most difficult mod around - and you'll grow to love it
i had a horrible start origianally but take a look at my signature (same as the link posted above - nice to see it being used!) and keep perserviering and you'll get there.
a good general early strategy is to abandon sicily, focus on Carthage in the south and then chase and fix whatever the gauls have done once S. Italy is yours
Edit; don't sacrafice the slingers because they do a suprising amount of damage - i'd possibly exchange the velites for more slingers against the gauls however

I haven't played this mod in a couple of years, holy crap! I don't remember it being this tough early on last time!
Early in the game is just an incredible challenge. I managed to take care of Hannibal but Carthage keeps sending out stacks from their city on the peninsula. I desperately need barracks to build/retrain Princepes and Triarii. Most of my units have been mauled by now but I think the Gauls have been bloodied enough so they shouldn't be a nuisance for a few turns. Oh, and lets not forget the Spartan Hoplites who cut through the Town Guard in Messana like butter, sheez!
Oh we did. Although im on old version still, welcome to hell!![]()

Sometimes I go back to an old campaign with 6.4 (without the super power fix addon).
But SPQR 7.0 really is THE ONE for me now![]()
I dont think word hard truly explains the game![]()

Not to my memory. I've played 6.4 before and I haven't noticed a difference in the starting moves.
Not saying I'm really good but maybe I'm used to the difficulty of this mod. I've found that I've had to think, work, and play harder on this mod than any RTS I've played before.
While fighting the Charthage I killed that one general whos name started with the "T" but I was destroyed as well...*sigh* I cant seem to win a battle without it costing me nearly 1k men. The least amount of casualties I have taken in battle was 700 men...is that normal?
BTW I blocked of Hannibals path so It seems he took the easy way out and took the settlement on the very southern tip of Italy![]()
High casualties at the start is normal. They'll begin to taper off as you get more practice with the battles as well as more experienced legions. The game does get harder later on when you realize that you must conquer to survive.
7.0 has been tweaked in many ways... for example, the Iberian armies on the Baliares, aswell I think the AI is much more prone to naval invasions! This made my campaign for Sicily in 7.0 the bloodiest ever.
7 is harder in my opinion carthage wants reghion bad and the greeks wont leave the sexy taras women alone
high causlities isent normal for me. against gauls i wont lose anything higher then 500 men. hannibal only cost me about 600. Use shield wall against gauls is help ALOT. And dont be so fast to commit your princepes, let the young ones have some fun.
If anything i would exchange slingers for more velites cause they do alot of damage to men and moral. Fighting hannibal in a city is far better then open battlefield, think of 300, in the narrow streets numbers count for absolutly nothing and they elephants are alot easier to kill.
‡Peace on earth - Death to the Enemy!‡
Elephants can easily die to a town watch in the streets of the city. Given the fact how AI is stupid, you can use corridors and crossings to extreme advantage and pwn even the biggest armies there.
