Anyone remember this? And the epic feel battles had back then?

What makes this feel lack in the 3d titles that came afterwards? I mean, except for the (worse) new campaign map mechanics and the 3d battles, Rome was quite plain. M2TW was a gap-filler. And now ETW seems so unfinished, and no matter how many soldiers you put on the field, it just doesn't feel as epic as MTW.
    Your thoughts?
And maybe there is a modder who could transfer the ETW graphics to MTW (just kidding)?

Nova, try the blood & smoke mod. That adds a TON of feel to the game.

And then look into either the Imperial Splendor or Darth Mod to get a more realistic feeling to the battles and campaign.

Until C/A fix the inability of the AI to board ships and cross the seas, it'll still be limited by things such as this British Beach Party...

    Agreed.

Regardless of the battle AI, I have altered the unit files to have 300 men in each line unit.

I cannot recall ever having 10000 men on a battlefield between only 2 armies (no reinforcements). With the smoke mod added in, I must admit there is a more epic feel to battles. Added to that are the larger battle maps.

Now if my sound could get fixed, it would certainly add more.

I have always liked the music in each game. I remember MTW only because it reminds me on Conan.

You're right. MTW was alot more epic, and not just because of the music. The maps were alot bigger and with more varied geography, making ambushes a useful part of your tactical arsenal. Also the armies were just huge. You could literally fight for an hour, with tons and tons of reinforcements pouring onto the field of battle.

I never quite understood why they made the maps so much smaller in Rome, and continued down that line with the last 2 games.

Just before I uninstalled Empires a couple of weeks ago, I installed the music part of the Mod and I must admit that it transformed the feel of an army marching towards battle.

However, all that wasn`t enough to hide the fact that the overall game was broken. Hell, the Patches made sure that even the music didn`t work half the time because it introduced new sound quitting issues!

I use Darthmod 0.9, and had the blood & smoke mod installed. Unfortunately, it killed performance once the volley exchanges began. There's still a lot to do for CA, although Empire has the potential to be the best total war game since Med1 once it's fully patched up and realism modded (read: in a year at the earliest).

The main weakness of the 3d titles is the new campaign map. With the old Risk-style map, it was guaranteed that there'd be tens of thousands of troops, making the battle longer and way more pitched. It made sense to set up a good defensive formation after getting rid of the first enemy wave - while in the later titles, there's no need to secure ground, since there's no more enemies anyways once you've beaten the main body. All enemy reinforcements pour in at once.... well, you know it.

Nova, you might want to try the Blood and Smoke mod light. It works very well on PCs that aren't high end. I use it, since my system isn't all that and a bag o chips... it's well worth a few less FPS (and no anti-alias'n) IMO

Thanks Arctander, maybe I'm gonna give it a try - thing is, my system is all that and a big bag of chips - I can run virtual all games maxed out with aa and af on the native resolution of my screen (1440x990). All except Empire, which is the main reason I built this rig

Mind putting that in your sig so we can see? I have this proverbial bag of chips myself and besides the crappy CTD's and sound issues since the 3/25 and 3/30 patch, it should make ETW fly!

OMG CRUSADER: NO REMORSE!!! ROFL... that's like going back to Bad Blood or Mines of Titan!!!! LOL NICE!!!

I never have the music on (I never do in games, period). I want the game to sound good with 'native', background sounds. Besides, what are we supposed to be doing, getting followed around by an orchestra?

It seems that longer the series goes on, the less epic the music.

Seriously, I could slow dance to some of the music in M2TW battles. The one you posted was possibly one of my all time favorite game music of all time, next to some in the Viking invasion and one in Rome (which appears rarely). This isn't nostalga talking, I could take samples of the music to people who have never played those games in their life, and they'd still say that the old ones were better.

Come on sound department, making 50 different noises for the muskets is good, but can the game at least have a musical score which at least generate some suspense? It's not like your options are limited, considering the orchestra was invented and made popular back then.

I recall Shogun Total War's Victory music when I won a battle. Always made me jump up and do a jig. Hahaha!

Man I miss that music. Medieval was the pinnacle, with pretty much every song being good. Rome was also excellent, but then M2TW had no good music, and neither does Empire. Can anyone even remember any of the songs in Empire?

Empire's maps seem to be big again, but yeah, Rome and M2 both had tiny battlefields.

EDIT: Kingdoms had awesome music, original M2TW sucked.

Patriotism... is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.

Am I the only one to think that the End of Turn waiting period is too quiet? When it cycles through all those factions, I get bored because there's no music (even in M2TW we had the bell that trailed off after 10 seconds)
