This thread is about the art of the guitar solo, and more specifaclly the greatest. It can be from any kind of music, metal, rock, pop even hip hop. Just post a vid and justify your reasons!

Mine has to be Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird". So many changes and the sheer scale of it is amazing. Ever tried to run away from police with it blaring in the background!? It works!

I hate to be Mr. Unoriginal, but for me the second guitar solo in Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb and the ones in Money have to be some of the best ever. Another vote must go to the first parts of Gilmour's guitar in Shine On You Crazy Diamond. The Shine On... one is just so perfect, its definately the best intro to a rock song Ive ever heard.

Some fantastic choices, Pink Floyd always have the ability to make great solo's. If you like that, you should check the solo from the song "Oblivion" by Mastodon, it certainly is not metal like some of the thier other material, very Pink-Floydish.

I love this band too much.

After reading the entirety of Pallantides Tokio Hotel thread, I would have to say the solo in "Monsoon". It was good enough to be in Guitar Hero!

At the moment, the only thing that comes to my head is "For The Love Of God" by Steve Vai.

    OH MY GOD

    STOP SAYING FREEBIRD

It is NOT a good solo! It is perhaps the most overrated piece of garbage ever. It's just three guys wanking over top of each other. No harmonic interplay, absolutely NO MELODY whatsoever, nothing. Just relatively fast playing with multiple guitars. Any jackass can do that.

If you compare that to something like Shine On You Crazy Diamond or Comfortably Numb......no contest. How can you compare something so melodic and beautiful to something so vile and ugly?

    /rant

As for me, my favourite solo has to be Achilles Last Stand by Led Zeppelin. Forget Stairway. It's a good solo, but ALS blows that out of the water.

A close second has to be Maggot Brain by Funkadelic. Absolutely heartwrenching.

Edit: to whoever said Pink Floyd's "Money": it's a good solo, but not really anything spectacular. Gilmour has a lot better solos. The "Money" solo just has the benefit of being propelled forward by the momentum from the saxophone solo before it.

The first one that always comes into my head is Hotel California, so I'll go for that.

Analysis should not be diverted by reflections upon the zeal with which the victors at the end of the Second World War punished the defeated for war crimes. The victors were animated by the ideals of the Atlantic Charter and of the United Nations. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was about to peep over the eastern horizon. But first, they wanted a little hanging.

    Stairway to heaven.

Awesome, but not as good as

    or

I couldn't find a small clip with just the dazed and confused solo, and the white summer sound quality is crap, so, sorry.

For my choice of a musician that doesn't make his living off his music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfOIfH8CuxA

For my pick of one that does: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNEactMrPKM (last few minutes...if you're at all familiar with the material it won't be too hard to find)

Both randomly picked as the first song that occurred to me for the categories.
