    Default clones

hi let me just start by saying EXCELLENT mod. there is one thing though that has always put me off playing rtw and this is that all the men in the unit are clones with the exact same clothes and facial features. so i was just wondering is it at all possible to create variations of men in each unit so they are more like the soldiers in m2tw were each man is not exactly the same. i suspect this is impossible but i just wanted to check.

Obviously you've only played M2tw before RTW. M2tw is the first game that has features of having different variations of soldiers in a unit. RTW does not have this feature. Try out the vanilla version of RTW and you'll know what I mean.

i was just wondering if the clones were one of the limitations of the rtw engine and if its one of those things that cannot be changed

For as far as I know, it can't be changed. Btw, RTW gameplay is much better then M2TW, imho.

QFT, graphics are nice, but the gameplay keeps me playing RTW-mods.

Not to forget, that although clones, the RS units look just as fine if not better.

wouldnt it be possible to make 2 or 3 skins for 1 unit tipe and make them random so that the people of 1 unit wil still be clones but that when you field multiple units they can have different looks.(its like having 3 troops with the same specs and names but different looks on the field. yet it still doesnt solve the problem of the clones per unit).

    cnaeus,
Unfortunately then each skin will use one unit slot and we don't have that many to spare. Having said that, it's a little bit of the approach we were thinking in creating a wider variety of units, so for the Macedonians for example, many of the phalangites have not that far differing stats, so you get to have a phalanx with varied units in it.

oke, well its nice to hear that actually, because in RS1.5 it is really weird using different types of phalangites in your main battle line, but the way you say its going to be in RS2.0 sounds really cool.

I really wonder at why CA implemented skin limit faction limit etc, in the first place. What harm could become of modders using 2435 skins instead of 2433? (random numbers)

Because that would make waaaaaaaaay too much sense.

    And we don't want THAT.

When RTW was created, you have to remember that PC's were much slower than they are now, and the amount of memory in the typical PC was less. The restrictions...though irritating now-a-days...were a 'safety feature' so that people didn't put 2400 skins in the game and choke their PC to death. And, I imagine that the RTW engine would at some point start having issues itself with too many units, factions, textures, etc. if there were no limits.......no matter how fast your PC is.

Heh. Clones are definitely annoying, but I'll take them over the moron-convention idiocy of Medieval.

Meh, who cares. I mostly have a zoomed out view in combat anyway and don't pay that much attention to the faces of soldiers. And also my phalanxes would look pretty much the same even if it was possible, with the same armor. And if they didn't look the same, I would teach them some discipline!

Actually, most of the Empire: Total War units are also clones. So you could say that RS2 will have the same level of variety in its units as E:TW -- it's that cutting edge

It's not really fair to compare a mod with vanilla anything (RTW, M2TW or ETW). There is, hopefully, bound to be improvements in a mod over vanilla anyday.
