I haven't played too many multiplayer games, but generals can be a tendency to do great good or great harm. While alive they inspire and keep up morale, when they die they shatter that morale and make your army that much weaker.
Well he's in less harms way on horseback protected by elite horse guards, mobile enough to get away from enemies or to inspire weak flanks.![]()

The point is, basically, that he adds more tactical depth. The enemy can try to kill your general to weaken your overall morale, or you can try kill the enemy general.
Using General's bodyguard is better than using another units for several reasons. They are cheap, provide a very good morale bonus, can rally routing troops, and are pretty solid in a melee.
Lately ive been making my gen a inf guard unit.....seems to do ok.
THe point of havint a general inspire your units is that he is moblie and can be moved quickly to and from whatever place he is needed
why don't they just make it free and limit it to one per player?
He has no rally button but within a certain range gives a morale bonus to the nearby troops and can halt a rout just by being close. Some elite units like guards also have a similar morale/area effect as well with the "inspires nearby units" trait.
The do indeed rally troops. Click on the information of your General's Body Guard and look at the abilities tab. It clearly states "Can Rally routing troops".
On more than one occasion have I rallied my routing troops. Just need to intercept them with your General.
As stated before.. it IS a passive aura.
