With no possibility of any party getting the absolute majority coalitions will rule the roost, once poll results are out. And with the existing coalition partners of Congress going their own way for the sake of the elections (seat sharing arithmetic gone wrong!), everybody has their fingers crossed.

Perhaps the cartoons in here sum up the mood better than my words, I guess.

What are your thoughts on the circus that is 'The Indian Elections'?

Perhaps you could share some insight as to the reasons you call it a "circus".
One cartoon didn't help me too much to understand.

I believe he is referring to the electoral process by where the voter must perform a series of tests in order to prove their mental capacity. Such tests include, but are not limited to, tight rope walking, one wheel bicycle riding, juggling knives and fitting your family of 35 into a mini cooper.

Aren't elections always a giant circus act. Clowns, uh I mean politicians, telling jokes to please the public, promising paradise etc. but when they're over its business as usual.

Oh, there are 4 cartoons. You need to hit the next button to check the other 3. Also, check the captions that go with the cartoons.

I call it a circus because there are too many parties. And then there are independent contestants too. Though there are only two main parties the chances of either of those getting absolute majority is miniscule.

In this situation, leaders of each of the fringe parties keep thinking they are the kingmakers. And yes, all these so called leaders do throw their weight around and LOL, each one also nurses the ambition of heading the nation!

That IMO is a good thing.
You don't want a single party leading 1/5th of the World, better share that power between a few parties.

Also, this gives people a real choice, not just some insignificant pick between the centre-centre-centre-centre-left and the centre-centre-centre-centre-right.

Yes, fringe parties can get disproportional power when they are needed to form a majority coalition.

But the biggest party in the coalition would be a fool to give away too much.
If the first fringe party makes too big demands, there are usually a few others to pick from as well.

I think BJP is in with a chance tbh. Congress' handling of terrorism, Pakistan and the Slums is all a joke.

Also, I love the way they want to use "Jai Ho" from slumdog millionaire, shameless bandwagoning, and it does nothing about the state of india's slums and the welfare of those in them.

Hardly man, the Varun Gandhi fiasco, last month has again damaged the BJP as well as their promotion of communal violence in the past.

I thought BJP liked the cow/elephant/arm god or whatever, and I'm pretty sure most of India like the cow/elephant/arm god. Solid support base IMO.

    exactly.

most people do not realize that just cos a person belongs to a religion he/she is not automatically supposed to support a party that runs on religious lines.

if thats the case why would India be secular? religion; however important to a Hindu; does not play as much of an important role when making political decisions than in most Islamic and certain non-Islamic countries

    PS: "cow worshiping"

PPS: lol on the map Chaghatai Khan posted i see my ancestral city, Jaffna; The crown upon the pearl of the Indian Ocean

Яome kb8, "It makes me smile seeing democracy on such a large scale!" Your smile alludes that the democracy is up and running like a well oiled engine! Liked that comment.

I think of all the developing nations, India has the most potential, more so then the entire continent and China. They just need to get over their crippling flaws.

Lol. That's not really a hard title too claim.

Yeah, but you still have a largely rural population, a rigid Caste system in certain Areas (the treatment of the Bhangis is pretty ed man), extreme poverty, separatism (is Kashmir even worth it?) and corruption.

At least India's working on her problems, which can be all solved resolved with more money. Unlike say Pakistan.

Yes I know about the caste system but that is mainly confined to the rural areas, poverty is a problem however I support Kashmir being part of India, if it were to join Pakistan it would be well and truly ed, this notion in Pakistan that all Muslims in India are suffering is complete and utter bollocks.Corruption is endemic too but at least we don't have a person like Asif Ali Zardari in charge, I have family on both sides of the border so I know how bad it is there too.

I meant compared to Sri Lanka,Pakistan,Bangladesh,Burma and China, India is a functioning democracy.
