Greek tactics?
Hey, I just wanted some tips on how the best use a Greek army in combat?
Right now I'm using skirmish line backed up by pikemen, with hoplites on the side. I use cavalry sometimes but right now I have no decent horse units to recruit. The battles work ok and I've found that Roman tactics don't go too well, so I'm just looking for a way to reduce casualties.
And tips and such?

Re: Greek tactics?
Phalanxes at the middle, sword hoplites on the sides. Peltasts and archers work better if attacking from the side or the rear, especially against the Hellenic armies you're likely to encounter, because their formations are really good against javelins. So the ranged units should be on your flanks, with maybe a few horsemen to prevent them being overrun. You could use your mounted javeliners to provoke the enemy (try to pepper one or two units which will give chase and will be isolated when they reach your lines). Your cavalry, if not heavy, should be used as a deterrent rather than a powerful tool to break units, but you can try to destroy any enemy ranged unit facing you, particularly at the beginning of the battle.
Hope it helps!

Re: Greek tactics?
This is the tactic I use when playing with the greeks, or when I'm outnumbered.

The key is to overload one flank of your army, so that you are numerically superior. In this case it's the right flank.
Breakdown:
- Your phalanx and left side hoplites should be on guard mode in order to pin down the enemy.
- Archers should be on fire at will and targeting the opposing cavalry.
- Your second and third row (sword)hoplites on the right flank should try to outflank the enemy and hit them from the flank or from the rear.
- Your cavalry should wheel around and hit them from the rear.
- The general should stay on the weak flank for moralbonus.
When the right flank breaks and routs (which will happen quite fast since you've got them surrounded), it's just a matter of rolling up the entire line.

Re: Greek tactics?
I play as the cimmerian bosporan, and I usually pin the enemy in with phalanxes, while troops like Bastarnae and Falxmen screen. Allied Scythian Lancers always do a good flank attack as well, and they are fast enough to chase off rival cavalry.

Re: Greek tactics?
Just make sure your phalanx line is longer then the enemies line and then close them in.
Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae.
