Many of you may remember that when I first came on TWC forums I posted a lot of pictures from my Pontus, Macedonia and Julii campaigns. Later, I moved onto a well-documented Saxon campaign. Now, I am playing campaigns as the Alemanni and Franks. They have been relatively dull... until recently, that is.
(N.B. I will happily post links to the previous picture threads if anyone asks)
So, the ALEMANNI CAMPAIGN.
You can see the exxtent of my territory from the minimap. I first had the sort of central european territory that the Alemanni end up in control of, but then the Ostrogoths attacked Rome's largest army, a full stack outside the sacred city itself. They beat them, but instead of sacking the city, they simply settled in North Italy, as you can see. I am freindly with them and their puny armies are constantly busy defending against Nomads.
The Goths owned all of Greece, so I went round them, taking all of Italy from the WRE Rebels and Vicus Sarmatae from the Rebels. However, the Sassanids attacked and I spent a long time eradicating the hatesome Goths.
So now a war is being waged between me and the Sassanids, and the fightng ground is in North Romania and Moldova - the Ostfront, shall we say. I have 2 'Legions' in the East and this army. The 1st Legion is on it's way to retrain in Constantinople - I will post it's full strength stats later. It is known as the 'Legio Gothica', in honour of it's deeds. It is led by Hortar the Horseman, who has obvious abilities. He is one of our most capable commanders - young, talented, and with a great command for his age. You can see that the 3rd Army - The Chief's Cavalry, are in a fort blocking a Transylvanian pass, with the constant garrison of 2 Night Raiders as well.
Thi is the 2nd 'Legion', the 'Legio Thracia' as I call them. Made from veterans and freshly trained troops, they come to relieve the 1st Legion, the Legio Gothica.
Unfortunately I could not get this pic. in better detail, due to uploading constraints. You can see that by having low garrisons, owning Greece and trading with both the WRE and the ERE that I have enough money for constant training, retraining and exspansion.
One or 2 turns later this is the location of the Battle. The Legio Thracia, along with the remnants (trapped by Sassanid 'influence' , if you know what I mean) and the 3rd Army - The Chiefs Cavalry.
Location and Formation. Unfortunately I could not use the Rock as a defence, so I foremd up wedged tightly against it. The cavalry formed up in the Saw formation (which I shall explain) , whilst shciltroms, bererkers, archers and experienced barbarian infantry waited for the Sassanids, with Sughdials, Clibinarii and more.
Here is the Saw formation, with the cavalry wedged, in a line, and Hortar in the middle, yet at the back of his unit, where he provides morale support and is in the fighting without being in danger. They can be used to drive men into the wedges, cutting them as effectively as the name suggests, or they can be told to attack - they will converge carefully but surely en masse until they form a giant wedge, smashing ANYTHING in their way. Nothing can stop a Saw formation of this magnitude.
The Chief's Cavalry advance...
The general, just before the impact in the charge. Watch this space, I may use this as a pic. of Caelus and Ostia for those who know my AAR.
The battle developed very realistically. The bererkers are about to charge the enemy spears, at the point where I have greatest control over them. The schiltrom holds easily. The experienced Chosen Archer warband hone their skills, providing covering fire. The cavalry can be seen in the background, having smashed the enemy's cavalry and killed their general. They now prepare to pounce on the enemy's rear.
The Chief's Cavalry, virtually untouched save a few missile casualties, admiring the work of their army that day. They have chased the routing enemy from the field, killing many. The Battle of The River Volga is won.
What do you think?
