I'm looking for more war and battle movies...it can by anything from stone age to modern (however I'm particularly looking for war movies based in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries).

    This is what I've seen:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Gladiator
    The Messenger
    Band of Brothers
    Saving Private Ryan
    The Thin Red Line
    Letters From Iwo Jima
    Flags of Our Fathers
    The Patriot
    300

    Saints and Soldiers
    Tai Guk Gi
    No Man's Land

I'm mostly looking for films made from the '70s till now

    Behind Enemy Lines is decent.

You have pretty much covered 'em all.

    Braveheart is a disgrace.

He is missing a perhaps the best War/Battle movie ever made or at least the most spectacular.

    Waterloo

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

That one scene is just so epic and you imagine that's what it was like at Waterloo. All real extras, people and horses and no CGI.

Here's some from my collection that you don't seem to have watched:

    Black Hawk Down
    LOTR trilogy
    Lawrence of Arabia
    The Winter War
    Patton
    Cross of Iron
    Das Boot
    Spartacus
If you like naval: pirates of the Carribean and Master and Commander

Before '70s (But still good if not better I think)
    Battleship Potemkin
Seven Samurai(trust me, this a great one!)
    Ben Hur
    The Great Escape
The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Got some good foreign war films in there too, you'll probably have a hard time finding them. Some of these, like Spartacus, are purely drama with an epic battle thrown in there.

    Also, Assembly:

Then maybe this, about the chechen war. It seems to be on youtube in its entirety but without subtitles.

And Russia seems to already have churned out a propaganda movie about the south ossetia war last year:

(ok, so that last one probably isn't good at all, but then there aren't that many war themed movies people don't already know)

    lol

Also is that a british guy, talking to the georgian(?) commander?

If so, it would make the movie a whole lot more awesome.

I know many of you are going to flame me for this, but I think more recent war movies are in fact, better than oldies. NOt just the better effects and filming techniques (which does help the viewer get a more realistic picture of a battlefield), but the Hays Code makes it difficult for a war movie to be good.

Alright well I've seen the LotR films, Black Hawk Down, Patton, and Behind Enemy Lines before (some of the ones I forgot to mention)

I never realized before how very few Roman era and Medieval era films there are, those are usually the most exciting with intense, bloody, and gritty fighting.

There's more interesting books written during that time rather than movie made about the eras you specified.

I'd find documentaries about those era's more interesting personally.

"Indigènes" or "Days of Glory" in the English version. Very good film about algerians fighting for France during ww2.
    "Gettysburg".
"Ride with the devil". Guerrilla warfare during the American civil war
"Land and Freedom". Ken Loach approaches the Spanish Civil war
Stalingrad and A Bridge too Far are a must.
And Behind Enemy lines is rubbish.

    Master and Commander
    Pan's Labyrinth
    Paths of Glory
    Henry V

    Are all strongly recommended.

    Some might count

    Aliens
    Starship Troopers

    as war movies

The Seven Samurai is essential. More recently, Mongol and Bang-Rajan are both pretty great.
