Just got back from my local Ringside Pub in Hull and Martyr Defiled and a couple of other good bands were playing, any way after a good pit I was talking to my friend who hates them - what are your opinions?

I think they add to the energy of the show, and if you don't want to be in them, don't stand near them.

Depends entirely on the band. Nothing worse than pits for bands that just don't warrant it. But what the hell's the point of going to a punk gig if there's no pit?

Absolutely love them, but can I can only go in for a song or two and then I have to rest, maybe come back in later. They're a very good workout, but at the same time it isn't entirely safe to be in the middle of a mass of bodies when you can barely stand up.

Haha not safe any where in a pit really! Depends on the crowd more then anything

    Depends entirely on the band.
I think when people pit it shows the band your really into the music they play, so maybe, next time I'm at Girls Aloud gig...

Meh, if you ever get genuinely hurt in a pit, it's because you're in there with a bunch of people who haven't got a ing clue what they're doing

They're outlawed around here, some people still try but they don't last longer than 2 minutes usually.

Can't say I mind too much, I'm more of a relaxing listener regardless of genre.
Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...

festival pits scare me muchly :p But gig pits are cool, had one a pitchshifter that kicked arse, same at a machine head gig, came out of that one bleeding But I'll go in for a song I really like then, go watch from the sides, have a beer and just listen, depends on my mood

I love Pits, in Argentina there's no rock gig that doesn't have one.
But sometimes it gets really annoying, specially if you began to dehydrate.

Anyway pits fit some genres not all of them.

Love em. A metal gig wouldn't be metal gig without a few pits.

People are generally friendly at gigs in my experience anyway. If you don't want to go in the pit, don't go in. If you do fall over or get hurt in the pit, people will drag you out and help you up. They aren't really dangerous if people know what they are doing.

And what makes me laugh more then anything is when you get those little nob-heads who do 'hardcore dancing', and then they get taken out by some big beef in a morbid angel T-shirt. Good times

Some pits I do look at and just think bugger that. I was at a Slayer gig a few years back, and half the venue, (It was the MEN, so there was several thousand people present) was a giant pit. I was in it for a few of my favorite songs, but I came out with a black eye and a bleeding lip. It was great fun though- when the adrenaline is rushing through you, you just don't notice. A Slayer gig isn't a Slayer gig unless you come out with some sort of injury imo )

Also, Circle pits are generally great fun- although you usually loose your shoes so have to run about trying to get them back...

BTW, thought I would post this for those that haven't seen them (I was involved in one, but they are banned so the bands don't announce them any more- but people know what to do by now). These are pretty stupid in my opinion, as it is pretty easy to get dragged into one unwillingly, and if you get caught in it, no one is able to pick you up and you end up being trampled.

The place I go to doesn't allow mosh pits. Because it is a small club venue and their are no barriers between the stage, bar or sound booth. Along with the pillars that are easy to run into. Bigger venues I have been to have them.

This is as good a time as any. Lamb of God is simply awful. I cannot figure out why people keep posting videos of them.

Immolation, Brutal Truth, and Cannibal Corpse at the Abyss in Houston back in '96. Now that was a pit. I only got to see three songs with Cannibal Corpse before I basically had my sternum fractured. I was in bed for five days after that show struggling to breathe.

I was going to see Deicide too, but I spent that night in a different kind of pit.

I'm sad to say I haven't got to see Slayer live, I've heard and seen that they can be quite energetic.
