why are there so many campers in team games?

ok, so a 4v4 game starts. theres a hill on the left side of the map and towards the middle, so i figure ill move my men up there so i can wheel around the enemy's flank and our team can encircle them. so i run all my men onto the hill and start engaging an austrian and american army. i turn the camera around and see my entire team just camping their spawns. i felt like william wallace when the nobles abandon him on the battlefield.

i never get this problem on 1v1 maps, almost everyone meets eachother at the middle of the field.

because they all feel it is more strategic, which it is. it also isn't very conducive to the game ever finishing if everyone played like that but this is what campers don't realize. or maybe they do realize it but just want to win so bad they will wait it out. there needs to be some anti-camper functionality within the game but that will never happen imo.

The anti-camper functionality is artillery. Whoever has more artillery has the advantage of forcing the other person to attack. That's why I always keep some artillery.

Agreed, having no artillery is an offensive lineup. Artillery on the other hand has to be carefully considered. Up until today I actually thought a couple of howitzers would do it...

People have to realize this is not an agressive game in the same sense as FPS. Contemplating, caution and thoughtfullness might actually be rewarding!

Finally a game that puts strategy in front of perfecthotkeys and fast fingers!!

Anti Camper Functionality = Artillery.

I've beaten campers by walking this up carefully into range before. If the game is no arty allowed, then simply get on the hill with them, and fight on even ground along the slope. All they do is needlessly drag the game out, and make it less fun usually.

Yea a great game ! You really messed up my line with that boarding thing, just when i thought i was gonna win. And then my heavy first rate got so far away you could sink the rest of my ships in peace and quiet

I frequently fight 4vs4 and can't complain about it.

Mostly when I move up, the teamm8e next to me usually moves along.
Of course, sometimes you do get the occasional retard. I just take it as being funny, and don't care if he loses the game. It's a game after all and everyone is entitled to their style as long as it is legit.

He spawned behind me, and started putting up stakes en mass while i moved forward to a strategical hill a little in front of my spawn. I noticed his defenses, and just packed my army all the way to the right to make closure with the other 2 teamm8es.
That one guy just stayed behind his stakes. While a major battle ensued 3vs4, he stayed there.

To end up getting routed in about 2 minutes of engagement.

True, players seem to take more risk when the game is not ranked, they sometimes even help me when i am fighting them 2on1. Progress!

play unranked, the ranks mean nothing when there are cheaters about anyway.

i've been playing MP for just over a week and have added every chatty fun player i met, so when the time comes for me to move up to 4v4's from 2v2's i will have some team mates to play with.

i have to say i'm pleasantly surprised with the players so far, only one massive camper, the rest have been fun and fair and polite. 1 rage quit in 15 games, the rest played out well.

The few 4v4 battles where your team trusts eachother and helps eachother are very fun, I like inviting people from my friendslist to team battles because of that.

It also happens other ways, when some idiot decides to go alone and rush a hill upwards that an enemy has without waiting for assistance despite having better and more artillery.

I have to say, it's where steam really shines, you can simply shift+tab (in my case) to open the overlay and then add from a list of people that you have recently played.

That plus the inbuilt VOIP means that i've found it very easy to add the players in the lobby while we wait and then be talking to them throughout the game.

And yes, why CA restricted ingame chat to something like 25 characters is beyond me. ever heard of word wrap?

They should have really made it INGAME

Now you have to add ppl to your friends to be able to use VOIP.
Would have been handier if you could just chat away with whoever is in ur team instead of adding randoms to ur friendslist.

The 25 character restriction does not really disturb me, the fact that everyone can read everything disturbs me faaar more

Yeah. Playing team games with people you don't have on Steam is a complete mess. You can't communicate at all with your teammate.

The inhouse 4vs4 games that ETW Quality hold are quite amazing. It's like a rush to the centre and one hell of a bloody battle ensues.

If the enemy camps, group up and smash one of the far left or far right flanks, then steamroll them.

Campers = No skill and all fear. Take advantage of it.
