...three major battles in a single turn (including capturing their capital and taking them down to a single province), then promising them it back along with three extra provinces in exchange for becoming a protectorate with a trade deal. They counter-offered demanding 50,000 on top of that, and the deal was done.

They still hate me (-500), but a protectorate is a protectorate.

So the best way to end wars, I think, is to win a load of engagements in a single turn to build up the 'war weariness' effect on the enemy populous. This seems to overcome their hatred for you, but doesn't linger if you beat them over a prolonged campaign.

So when you've won your battles, take the leader up to a ridge overlooking a fair and pleasant land and say to him; "Follow me and all this could be yours..."

I've finally seen this too, although I have been using the Imperial Splendour Mod.

Playing as GB, the Iriquois declared war on The Thirteen Colonies. They then promptly took over New York

A couple of turns later, I got the message about The USA emerging and whether I would recognise them (I did). However The Thirteen Colonies didn't and then promptly lost Boston to the USA. I then sent a scratch force to New York and captured it. The following turn, for the first time I've seen, the USA sued for peace, offering a small cash payment and to be a protectorate.

    I said no.

I have yet to have the AI offer peace but i find it accepts it fairly readily.

All you need to do is sue for peace after winning a major victory or 2 and have an large army in a threatening position close to their capital. They seem to happy for peace in such a situation, not so much for becoming a protectorate but you can get peace first then improve relations enough to get a protectorate.

Odd, I've never had major trouble like that. I've found the AI accepts peace readily most of the time. I've never had to offer more than one province or 20,000. Getting the AI to accept trade deals is often harder! The other day I had an interesting experience where the AI sallied out of their capital, I defeated them, but I didn't take the capital because of the stupid siege bug.

All nice and such, but like I said many times: it should be the AI begging for peace in stead of you who can easily get it all.

Additionally it would be nice if you get a relation penalty towards every faction when you turn down a peace offer from a faction you're about to destroy.

The Papal states refused 100.000 in cash, despite having to army left and all its country in pillaged. Those catholics are stubborn!

Savoy got 50.000 plus Lombardy for a peace deal.

Portugal demanded 100.000 for protectorate status after annihilating them and letting them come back via revolution. They had no army, no university, no barracks (razed them), still, they would not give up.

So, peace AI has much to be desired.

ive never really had trouble getting the AI to accept peace, nor having trouble getting them to be a protectorate. Especially the german states.

Wow I never got a proposal that I will give 20.000+.

To get Morocco as my protectorate, I attacked them. They has only one region so I did not capture anything. I just killed their army, destroied all of their towns. Then they attacked a small force of mine(because I splitted my big army that I have all of the towns to keep them damaged), and attacked again. When they failed winning both of these battles and they had like 2 units, they asked me if they can be my protectorate, and I needed to pay only 500.

You just need to destroy their army, and show a big and strong military presence, and they will ask you for a minimal fee.

Anything that adds to war weariness also effects the AI with regards to negotiations as well.

So number of consecutive battles lost, towns raided, ports blockaded, etc.. can stack pretty heavy in a negotiation with the mechanics involved. It is important however that these items be consecutive and immediate.

Ie, several battles lost in a few turns, along with port blockade, trade route raid, etc...

On my medium and hard campaigns I have had no problems with peace but on my current VH campaign it's a lot harder. Even on hard I could make peace at will but now I actually have to hurt them.

I actually got a peace offer from Prussia last night. They did demand their provinces back ( I had taken 2 out of 3 last turn), but offered to become a protectorate and give me the knowledge of selective breeding.

Playing as prussia, asked united provinces for peace repeatly with an offer price of 300,000! they just keep rejecting me and saying "our last soldier ... " thing

I finally gave and manually changed attributes in the diplomacy manager of the save game file (switched several non-zero integers to zero). then I loaded the save game and offered peace again, they accepted the offer at the price of 17,000

The Barbary states requested peace with me before (knights of st John)
I was pretty surprised by this since the only battle we fought was on the 1st turn were they destroyed my navy and since they are at war with evry single nation I didnt even think it was possible to make peace with them.
They didnt even demand anything in return just peace

They aren't at war with Persia, Morrocco, or the Ottomans, and are in fact a protectorate of the Ottomans.

Unlike the pirates, the Barbary states are actually a proper faction, they just start out at war with everyone.

I want to know how you guys got the AI to beg for peace and offer to become your (protectorate). I've never seen this in my campaigns, it's always me having to make the move.

Oh and ppl having trouble getting deals, check the sig

Like I said above. Took two of their provinces (East Prussia & Brandenburg, they held on to West Prussia). Knocked out most of their army in the process. Prussian begging commenced.

Maybe they felt less secure since West Prussia is not one of their starting provinces.

No! No! No! It is easier than that! LOL Use Spain as an example. Take Spain proper and one or two other spanish province in a Blitz, immediately offer back the lesser province in return for them to become protectorate, any technologies you want, and a trade deal. If they dont take it take another province and offer again. Eventually, most nations will take the deal without you having to pay at all! Also watch out for trade agreements you have to pay for. Sweden is bad about wanting a trade deal for 1500, 2000, or 2500 and the cancel the next turn!

Yes I did it too with Spain. In one turn I captured their two cities in Italy and Sardinia. Than I asked for peace and they agreed. I even managed to get a few technologies out of that peace treaty.

The very first meaningful diplomatic exchange I had in ETW was playing as Prussia, taking two of Poland's territories in quick succession, and then asking for peace. My eyes popped when they accepted. It was then that I knew diplomacy had been revamped from M2TW... that never would have happened before.

Few decisive victories always work to obtain good negotiation conditions. But to join protectorate it has to be very much winning on your side.
