...three major battles in a single turn (including capturing their capital and taking them down to a single province), then promising them it back along with three extra provinces in exchange for becoming a protectorate with a trade deal. They counter-offered demanding 50,000 on top of that, and the deal was done.
They still hate me (-500), but a protectorate is a protectorate.
So the best way to end wars, I think, is to win a load of engagements in a single turn to build up the 'war weariness' effect on the enemy populous. This seems to overcome their hatred for you, but doesn't linger if you beat them over a prolonged campaign.
So when you've won your battles, take the leader up to a ridge overlooking a fair and pleasant land and say to him; "Follow me and all this could be yours..."
