So it seems the communists have trouble this escalated in violence and the students tried to take parliament building from what I hear on tv 20 people are wounded and more are coming to the streets.

Its pretty hard to get information since no tv stations are allowed to film and mobile phone operators are down from what I hear on tv.

Its pretty dangerous whats going on there if this escalates even more we may have trouble and grave political implications.

So for now I hope that the communists dont do something stupid and try to overwhelm the people with brute force.

International observers were present in only a few districts, mainly in Chisinau, the capitol city. The rest of the country was the communist party's playground. Even before the election Voronin's administration made sure that moldovans working abroad, especially in Romania, cannot cast their vote and, when hundreds of them tried to cross the border into Moldova, were stopped for bogus reasons.

Maybe those observers didn't want to piss off Russia, Voronin's best friend.

Well good luck to them but I don't care. Share a border with Russia and your mostly ed, anyway.

That may be the most far stretched borders I've heard of.

This is political and most reasonable geographical limit of Balkan, with Romania usually not counted except when talking about poverty or war because it is much easier to explain bad things happening if it happens in Balkan hellhole. Such as in this case when you explain Moldavia protests by Balkan stereotype.

Its really turned ugly now the opposition parties demand a new election first I heard this on a Romanian tv station but now its confirmed by Reuters so it seems its true.

Now the protesters got political support and the protests and violence may spread.

Im watching the events on tv now it seems that their is smoke coming from the parliament building and protesters are throwing rocks at the police and some protesters managed to enter the parliament thats all that they are saying now ill keep everyone updated as I hear more.

The parliament and presidential office are now occupied by protesters. Any news on Voronin? Sorry I'm not in front of a tv right now.

Yep they stole the flag from Voronins office so protesters have entered the building Voronin is not there it seems I heard that hes called an extraordinary session to decide what to do.

It sucks that we cant confirm this information all the Romanian tv stations have is rumors and a few reporters beacuse our reporters cant enter the country.

    Update

It seems moldovan tv stations aren't reporting the protests we saw a feed from moldovan national tv they are broadcasting a children's show so they are clearly attempting to play this down and misinform the people.

It seems EU flags Romanian and Moldovan ones are anchored on the parliament building so it means protesters have the building.

Oh big ing whoop! They dropped a crest! We dropped our communist-era crest as well during our revolution in 1989! It is a symbol: wash away these false colors painted over us and see the unity that lies beneath! The tricolors are similar enough. And btw, the Moldovan flag doesn't have the crest on the reverse.

BTW, in Kosovo they flew Albanian flags. It just goes to show you that artificially-constructed nations do not last in the face of national self-determination. The Soviet Union invented a Moldovan nation; now the world gets to see it implode.

Anyway, I hope nobody dies but I would be lying if I told you I was not expecting this. I was expecting a more peaceful unification with power going to the opposition during elections. This is interesting however.

I've got my fingers crossed. Good luck to my compatriots and brothers over the Prut.

Honestly, if this were 1956 you would probably be going on and on about "stupid protesters in Hungary." What is your stake in this anyway, besides the obvious Russian military bases on Moldovan soil?

I wasn't very clear. I was referring to the separatist region run by Moscow.

you clearly aren't referring to anything run by Moscow, because Moldova is a separate country, whch hasn't been friendly to Russia either.

in fact, Romanians have been salivating all over the idea of annexing Moldova and Transdnistria, and judging from the pictures of kids with Romanian flags - this is exactly what is about to happen .

just talk to any of our Romanian nationalists at TWC, they are probably getting a hard on by now. we had plenty of threads, where we discussed these issues 100 times over.

ugh, and Russia has nothing to do with it - neither with Romania nor with Moldavian govt.
