It's a "directive", i.e. we don't have to follow it.

As for this non-sense, its an EU Directive, so it has to be implemented, but I get the impression lots of member nations are unhappy about it.

I'd point out though that most of this information was stored voluntarily or on specific government request anyway. The way we've implemented the directive just makes it all statutory. The downside is it makes it available to local authorities and agencies as well as Government and Police - Why?
