Arab Israeli girl hoped to avenge Gaza

An Arab Israeli girl shot dead by border guards in the Negev desert at the weekend was seeking to avenge Israel's military offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Basma Awal al-Nadri, a 16-year-old bedouin high-school student from southern Israel, had written in her personal diary that she wanted 'to die as a martyr for Palestine, for Gaza', according to documents read out in the court.
The court in Beersheva ordered her father, mother and an uncle to continue to be held in detention for up to another four days after police said the girl was unlikely to have acted alone, despite the family's assurances to the contrary.
Border police said they shot dead the girl after she opened fire at them on Saturday at the entrance to their base at Shoket junction, near Beersheva.
Major Moshe Finsi, spokesman for the border guards, said Nadri had tried to enter the base.
'When the sentry blocked her from entering, she opened fire with a pistol after police demanded that she surrender. So the border police shot back,' he said.
'She was carrying a backpack, raising suspicions that she was planning a suicide mission. But it turned out she was not carrying explosives,' Finsi added.
Israeli newspapers said the backpack was filled with schoolbooks.
Israel waged a 22-day war on the Islamist Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip to halt rocket fire from the territory until a January 18 ceasefire that followed the deaths of more than 1,300 Palestinians.

This story is quite sad. The girl was only 16 years old and the border guards shot her dead. She was suspected of carrying explosives in her backpack but all it had in it was school books. This war is getting out of hand if children are wanting to become martyrs to save their homes. Sure, many would argue that it has been out of hand for some time but this is a new low.

Has the war stopped because of this girls sacrifice? No, and it won't be stopped with more killing or martyrs. Nadir had no business being out in the desert with plans to take revenge by killing some people. You can also understand the position of the guards, the girl was denied entry and then started shooting, they demanded her surrender and she refused, so they acted in self defence and took her down before she killed anyone.

I want to know how the rest of the forum feels about this, whether you condemn or condone her actions and the actions of the border guards.

Really highlights the depravity of our society if when a girl is killed in this manner and the reasons behind it only ellicit the response

oh come on man...death has been around forever, and people's attitudes have been largely the same too. just read ancient greek sources on the very subject. We're not saying it isnt sad, it is however a reality of life.

TV, the internet and computer games do not have this major effect everyone has been told to believe.

We all know that this would just result in two factions emerging, The Enclave and the Brotherhood of Steel. There is so much hate and anger from both sides that it is no suprise that even children get involved in this. From young martyrs to messages written on shells about to be fired by artilery, this is madness.

Maybe it is time to realise that the Israeli approach on the issue simply creates more and more people willing to be martyrs and prolongs the conflict. Problem is that we reached a point that either both sides back down or none will fearing of it beeing labeled as defeat.

Please people, dont tell me I am the first one to wonder why someone would have schoolbooks in his backback when planning a suicide operation.

I find that case of "prevented terror" dubious.

Maybe they shot her, put a pistol in her hands and faked the last page of her diary. Wouldnt be the first diary that got "spiced up" a bit (Diary of Anne Frank anyone?).
