Freezing 30 seconds after startup

My game had been working up until the latest patch (3/30 I believe), with only occasional CTDs (and only after the first patch). I had played two quick campaigns (prussia and UP) and was in the middle of a long campaign with France.

Since this most recent patch the game freezes after ~30-60 seconds regardless of whether the intro is still running, I am in the main menu or have started a new or saved game. Since the problem started I have updated and rolled back and updated (again) my video drivers with no success. I have also deleted the "Creative Assembly" file in %appdata% as that had fixed problems that sounded similar with no success. I have no modded or changed any other files (yet).

The game runs fine until it hangs and freezes. If I really rush (pushing "end turn" right after the game loads) I can get in a whole AI turn sequence before the game freezes.

The game does not CTD and I get no error message, it simply hangs and I cannot even ctrl+alt+del out of the game. I let it hang for 20 minutes on one occasion just to give it a chance to actually crash and give me an error message, no luck. I have to restart.

Your system spec looks OK - it should run ETW.

Id suggest having a read of the following 'good practices' quide (even though it is for a RTW game most of the points are still relevant):

I'd also suggest looking at which services are running in the background. Run 'msconfig' to do this. I'd look up what each service is before stopping it though (you can prevent services from starting which can be disasterous).

Some people have reported various problems since the latest patch. I guess I am lucky in that although I am using old drivers (I've got a Nvidia GTX280s in SLI system) the game itself has been very stable).
