Default 35,000 A level pupils may lose their school places

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/lif...cle6032591.ece

If you're English and 16-19 years old, as I know many of you are, you may not be getting an education because of the sheer ing stupidity of the Government. They have emailed schools the day before the end of the financial year (giving them no time to adjust budgets or seek additional funding) concerning the fact there is a £60 million hole in the finances. Teachers are going to lose jobs, standards are going to plumet. Oh, and if you're English your paying for free Scottish university education, even though we can't afford to educate college level English students. Fantastic.

It's a matter of union to my knowledge. It's price of the union for England, but they also benefit from Scotland; their natural resources (oil and gas) as well as being economical centre of British Islands. This decision is however hardly justified and desirable.

Ferrets will surely correct me if I got something completely wrong here.

Forgive me, but wouldn't England be the economic centre for the British Isles without Scottish support anyway? I mean, it kind of always has been...

It's more of a matter, that the union makes it easier for Scottish capital to move into England. The natural resources and other economical sectors that could have been nationalised otherwise (used solely for the benefit of Scottish people), or remained in Scottish soil have now easier time in England. It's only natural that Scotland have some special perks as otherwise it would be quite one sided union. After all, the union exist there to benefit all union members and not just the "dominant" one. England already enjoys quite a bit from this union, that is why it's only fair that the other one also gets their fair share. At least this is my simplified impression of how the union works.

EDIT: I hope someone corrects me if I'm all wrong...

£60 million isn't that much money, how can a budget hole this small cause problems?

It's the combined salaries of quite a lot of teachers. It could buy an extremely large amount of textbooks. It could put a computer in every room of a lot of schools.

Yes, but as a % of the budget, or compared to the billions spend on saving the banks, it's almost nothing.
Why not just increase the national debt by 0.01%?

Increasing national debt is the last thing that any sane person would ever want to do. So there you have it, Labour will probably increase the national debt.

    Fair enough. Thanks for explaining.

You English are far too nice. Even in these turbulent times you look out for your little brother.

Yeah, but you cant change it. I guess in the short term you can try to restructure the way England pays Scotland, so that its more equal in this regard- but in a year or two, no one will be able to school, and no one will be able to change that.

Soon the Barnett formula will be gotten rid of, Barnett himself says its done it's job.

    - but in a year or two, no one will be able to school, and no one will be able to change that.
What do you mean by "no one will be able to school''?
