    Default Own army units AI.

I was having a battle the other day and sent a cav unit to loop around the flank of the enemy army and take out an artillery emplacement, while this was happening i was concentrating on the rest of the battle.after a few minutes i went to check on the cav unit. They had successfully taken out the artillery, but the enemy had double timed an infantry unit over and were shooting the hell out of the cavalry.and my cavalry just stood there in perfect ranks while they were hosed down with musket fire. They should have some kind of skirmish abilty where if they are threatend in this way they run away,or attack whoever is shooting at them.Or to counter charge enemy cav instead of just waiting to take the charge,I know i am the general and give them there orders but i cant babysit all my units at the same time.

the idea, i think of this in game terms, is that you troops don't have any sense of making decisions for themselves for two reasons.

    1. It might go against what you want.
    2. A game is trying to test your skill at it, therefore you should be paying attention to your troops enough to make your men move away from danger

yeah but i cant keep tabs on 20 units 24/7..they need some self preservation routine, even a skirmish option for cav like in previous games would be better than nothing

I agree, it is very annoying when your units just stand there getting slaughtered when they could easily attack and rout that unit of firelock mob shooting them.

Pause the game every few minutes to survey the battlefield. Slow motion may actually be better for this because you can actually see the direction the enemy is moving in.

You can keep an eye on the unit tabs on the bottom of the screen though and if you notice a unit is losing numbers dramatically or has the "being shot at" status icon in the top left you know they need some attention.

It would be nice to have some basic AI packages that you were able to "turn on" to make the unit temporarily self-sufficient. Of course, with some of the AI I have seen the enemy units exhibit, this probably wouldn't be any better.

I think its not a good idea, because it might turn against you sometimes.

I agree with what Teastain said:

they should have a planned attack order like CNC3 where by you can issue a string of command and the unit will do one after another so after the artillery flee the horse will go to the next way point.

of course it doesn't account of where the enemy has moved but it give you some flexibility.

If you are not good enough to play properly, use "pause".

The ally AI is definitely a hell of a lot better than any previous TW game, but I still wouldn't ever cede control to it voluntarily.
