    Default GCS, retraining Cretan Archers

I am currently playing a campaign as the GCS. I do not know how to retrain my Cretans and Rhodians, which annoys me, as I am OCD and have to have my armies "just so" in order to be happy. Is it only possible to retrain them in Crete and Rhodes, or is it just not possible at all?

As I understand the AOR system, a faction such as Roma or even Germania can recruit Greek Hoplites (for example) if they capture Sparta (or any region with the appropriate native Greek culture) and build the Auxilliary Barracks. However, if GCS had control of Sparta, with only the Auxilliary Barracks, they could not recruit Greek Hoplites. This is because Greek Hoplites are part of the Greek Barracks system too. In a nut shell, what I am trying to say, is that there is absolutely no reason to build Auxilliary Barracks in your native lands (at least, I suppose, this applies to most factions/places). In fact, it would not only waste money, but also enable a foreign force to quickly rebuild an army if they captured your city. Is this true?

Thanks again, sorry for the uninformed questions.

Yeah, you need to send your Rhodians and Cretans back to their homes. As far as auxilary barracks, no there is no need for them to have Cretans and what not for the Greeks.

As dirty_M said, you will need to return the Cretans and Rhodians back to their respective cities for retraining.

I also was wondering the same thing about auxiliary barracks. The way I see it, it truly is a detriment to you building them in your own territory, as they cost extra money, do not allow you to train extra units, and allow a conquering army to retrain (as you said). Therefore, I only see it meaningful to build them in newly conquered enemy territory if they are not already stupidly built by the original faction.

What level barrack is required for retraining? Can I ever just recruit them in the city instead of hiring them with a general in the field?

    You're doing it wrong

Some faction benefit vastly from auxiliaries. Carthage relies on them early on as their own troops are terrible. Certain factions and terretories have more and better Auxiliaries then other. Iberia is one of the best areas, since you get basicly a full roster of troops from the auxiliary barracks.

Yes, you can recruit them in the cities. I believe it's second level barracks for the slingers, and third for the archers.

It does depend on the faction. Barbarian factions and Rome can't recruit most Greek auxiliaries, and eastern factions get little benefit from an auxiliary barracks in many areas. In Africa, nearly everyone gets some sort of auxiliaries. So it just depends. If you check the building details scroll, you can see in advance what auxiliaries will be available to you in that region.

Cretans are 3rd level barracks (City) and Rhodian Slingers should be 2nd, AFAIK. AOR barracks are more useful to some factions than others. For example, Carthage needs them to survive, while Gaul probably won't make use of them the entire campaign (maybe if you get to Thrace...). They do, sometimes, fill crucial holes in your roster (like Celtic Heavy cav do for Rome, or Cappodocian Cav too)
