Default One mans quest to educate Pakistan/Afghanistan

In 1993, Greg Mortenson, to honor his deceased sister Christa's memory, attempted to climb K2, the worlds second highest mountain in the Karakoram range of northern Pakistan. After getting lost during the descent, he became weak and exhausted, and by chance alone, instead of arriving in Askole, where his porters awaited, he came across Korphe, a small and unremarkable village built on a shelf jutting out from a canyon. He was greeted and taken in by the chief of Korphe, Haji Ali.

To pay the remote community back for their compassion, Mortenson promised to build a school for the village.

Mortenson faced daunting challenges in his quest to raise funds for the building of more than 55 schools in Taliban territory, including death threats from Islamic mullahs, long periods of separation from his family, and being kidnapped by Taliban sympathizers.

This is eerily similar to the hippies sticking flowers in the guns of the military. Looks strange from our vantage point, but i'm betting it is vastly more effective than a lot of the bs the U.S. has wasted cash on. We should re-name the 'war on terror' to the 'war on ignorance' (then i could finally, legally, shoot my boss :-) )

Yeah I read the book last year. (Would not recommend it)

See the guy as a pervert and a crazy who should have built the school and gone home.
    Why did you post this?

If there was a "War on Ignorance" (remarkable good idea there) I would have so much fun
