Protectorate limit?

I'm playing as the United Provinces and have Bavaria, Westphalia, and Wurttemberg as protectorates (I own all of Spain, France, and Italy). I want to make Venice my protectorate now to complete the wall of protectorates between me and the rest of Europe, but it won't give me the option in Diplomacy. Has anyone run into this?

Also, do protectorates ever turn on you? Some of mine have gone unfriendly, I think because of my rapid expansion.

I think you can only make a protectorates if they only have 1 city, Venice starts with 2.

Venice owns the Greek hand bit. Polynesia. Penelopesia. Something like that.

Exactly, only factions with only one region left can be made protectorate. Sometimes the become protector option don't show up even with a one-region minor(like Saxony) but after declaring war and destroying their army on the field, the option pops up again.

Other than that, no limit that I can see. Got half the Europe as protectorates in my last campaign, but it became too peaceful to be fun

Yep, as they stated, 2 regions does Venice have, and an ungrateful protectorite it'll be too. Dont ever turn your back on those jokers. I've had them 3 times now under my thumb and 3x's now they've turned on me at some point, by either assaulting another protectorite or myself in some vain attempt to be acknowledged.

Currently, I'm upto 12-13 under my wings, the hard part is keeping your 'powerful' Allies from donkey punching them w/out getting all your feathers ruffled up.
