WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States will push hard for Palestinian statehood despite a new rightist government in Israel but anticipates a rough road ahead, a U.S. official said on Thursday.
"We're going to be working hard to see what we can do to move the process forward. But we're under no illusions. It's not going to be easy," said State Department spokesman Robert Wood.
"We have to engage constantly and remind the parties of their obligations and to try to set up a framework, a process for getting us toward that goal of a two-state solution," Wood added, referring to the goal of separate Israeli and Palestinian states, living side by side in peace.

This is a good sign, although I have no illusions, this is going to be hard. At least there will be some pressure on Israel and the PA to have a solution.

@VC: Potentially, but we can't know yet so you can't say that. Getting us involved abroad, setting back democracy in the ME years, scarring our reputation are all tangible things that suck. Hell, at least Obama is spending the money on our country.

but on topic i do not agree with palestinian indpendence more that they have equal rights as any israeli and the the west bank and the gaza strip join israel and just live and work together in peace if you make palestine its own country only more fighting will result especily with the very right wing goverment right now

This will never happen. Actually this is exactly why some of the right wing polticians in Isreal want a 2 state solution (like Sharon); if the palestinians were incorporated into Isreal (one state solution), Jews would become a minority and lose control of the government.
