Naval battles too hard for me (i suck) annyone want a challenge?

In all other strategy games I played, ships behaved just like your land unts, wich made them easier to maneuvre (and a faster paced game) In Empire I never get my ships to position how I want, or shoot who I want, and I exit out of every ship battle there is, because they move so damn slow, turn so damn slow and fire so damn slow.

I don't blame CA for this, it's more realistic, and shows I'm an inpatient person who is bad at naval warfare

Now normally I wouldn't care too much and auto resolve my naval battles, but even tough spain has no lands on the peninsular, and Morroco is blocking the strait of gibraltar, and they are at war wih portugal wich has a strong fleet yet they mannage to maintain 2 8 stack fleets near morocco wich both intercept my fleet carrying my veteran army from the america's.

I've reloaded and autoresolved the battle exactly 57 times now with the same result allways (shouldn't the result vary?) and tried fighting the battle myself but obviously lost.


So, I was wondering, if I upload the save file, could someone please win the sea battle for me? (you'll be outnumbred and won't have verry great ships) and then after winning the naval battle save over my file and upload it again?

Well I'll try fighting it tomorrow assuming no one else has won the battle by then.

edit: hmm ok I just tried it, and it looks like this battle is too difficult. The problem is, the Spanish galleons have too many guns and men, and the three fourth rates are no match for all of them. I forgot to check, but if you can retreat, I would strongly advise that, and if not, then it's just a loss you'll have to stomach I guess.

Also, were you using any mods? Cause I've never seen Portugal conquer all of Spain.

I'm using blood mod and smoke mod and fife and drums mod, I can't retreat, if I retreat, I end up near a portuguese port being blockaded by a Spanish fleet, wich imediately leaves the blockade to attack me, thanks for trying, I guess it's an impossible battle my favourite army is on board those ships

I've seen Portugal take all of Spain before.

turning off the volumetric effects in the graphic options might help as you cannot do damage to sails and rigging and maybe even some other damage.

Interestingly enough people who play a lot of naval games say that this combat is too fast and 'arcadey'. The trick is very similar to the land battle: Plan ahead and move against your enemy.

The big mistake I still think people are making is the "RIght Click to Attack" error.

This does not work.

What it does is to send your shis to attempt point blank broadsides and NOT to actually manuever to attack. What you want to do is try to keep 3-5 ships in a line formation and manuever so that you're giving broadsides as a group.

One thing to do is to practice by doing a lot of naval single battles. Get used to the manuevering. Get used to how ships turn and how fast. Watch the wind. If you turn into the wind you will come to a stop. So don't. Keep the wind behind you when you can.

Really it can be learned if you have the patience to learn the tricks.

It's an admiral, 2 fourth rates and a Brig against 8 Spanish ships If I'm not mistaking, I guess it can't be won

Im not a big fan of sea battles in ETW, they seem to have struck an unhappy medium. Not quite unrealistic enough to be fun, but not realistic enough to be able to recreate various legit historical naval maneuvers. I mean ships turning on the spot! really!
A reason you might be having difficulties is if you have your battle difficulty set to h/vh, if that is so enemy ships get a MASSIVE fire power and hull bonus while your ships get nil. While playing on vh I've had a galleon fire a broadside into a sloop and cause less then 1/10th hull dmg, the sloops retaliation dropped the hull of the galleon to 7/10 of its total.

Just fyi you can change the battle difficulty at any time in the escape menu of the campaign, put it to easy and read a few guides it may help.

There is a larger Spanish navy that attacked me after the win, so I'd recommend you withdraw from it.

If you run XP, Documents and Settings > Your username > Application Data > The Creative Assembly > Empire total war > Replays.

Unrar it and save it there.

That's the problem with replays, it never shows the results of things properly, just the movements, one thing goes wrong and it snowballs.
