    Default Naval assault

I think one of the defining characteristics of the 18th century was being the age of sail. Now, I like the naval battles in this game, they are pretty good, but I was hoping for something more.

It would have been really cool if they added the ability to do a naval assault. You're in the campaign map and you attack some costal town, fort, or port, then you go into battle mode. You'd get your ships moving closer to shore so you could do a naval bombardment, then you would have the ability to drop your row boats, fill them with marines, and do a naval assault on the city, or fort, or port.

The Marines would be like light infantry, so no need to move in formation, just loose, hiding behind walls, inside building, etc, and with perhaps having the ability to throw grenades.

I think it would'be been a fun feature to have in this game.

    Your opinions?

Thats a great idea. But its prolly impossible for CA to do something this complex. They released the game and can't even figure out how to get their AI to use the ships to transport troops.

It would be cool if AI could just do a naval seaborne invasion full stop. That`s all I want! I want an AI that will challenge my borders and my colonies and make me sweat!

    I don`t want a dead AI.

If if CA could just somehow ...figure out how to fix this issue. Maybe they should hire some professionals.

These really easy potshots at CA are getting tiring now. "WE'RE ALL BETA TESTERS LOL!"

You're not helping any with you're god awful jokes.

Naval assaults would be cool, but would take very careful balancing to but the lander at a disadvantage but not allowing the defender to just set up on the beach straight away and mow down the incoming troops.

Ok. I will strive to help from this point on. But how? Shall... I buy a few more copies of the game? Would that help them figure out how to code AI navel invasions?

Naval units fighting with land units?

Sounds like a feature that would be broken for 4 months with 12 different bugs that would crash our games and cause horrible sound issues.... So basically it sounds like the situation we're in now, but with Naval vs land units...

That would be great, and it would definately make the rocket ships and bomb ketches more than powerful novelties.

I believe there should have at least been the feature of naval bombardment on the campaign map. For instance, bombarding a coastal town would decrease the amount of turns it takes for the enemy garrison to surrender, or damage the buildings within the town.

Sid Meier's Pirates was a great game... I was really hoping for Empire to carry that mood a bit more.

Naval bombardment would indeed add something to the game. But regarding amphibious assaults as described above, I disagree. As far as I know such amphib assaults were not at all common in the 18th century. Instead, landing forces would leave the ships some way down the coast, in a safe distance from the intended target. Then the land force would march to the target and mount a standard land assault, while the naval forces would sail there and start naval bombardment.

They should just copy/paste the AI from Civilization to the campaign AI.

EDIT: At least it knows how to do naval invasions.

Precisely. I keep thinking back to CIV4 (which I am playing at mo for my strategy fix) and wondering if CIV4s AI can do Naval invasions why are CA too dense to do it? And no one tells me cos the game`s more complex. It isn`t becuase the Campaign screen for Empires, as with all Total Wars and Civ4 are extremely similar.

CIV4 uses a smart process where it decides several turns ahead that it has had enough of the player or other enemy faction and prepares its forces. It gets its army ready and its ships ready. Then it declares war and sends them over. What the hell is wrong with CA that they can`t instruct the Empires AI to do it?

There`s nothing more stimulating to make a Player leader worry than having a troop ship and several battleships off the coast and hundreds of troops land next to your capital and start marching!

That`s all we really want! Even then CIV4`s AI does so many other things too!

If it wasn`t for the 3D battles I wouldn`t even be thinking of reinstalling Empires when (if) they fix the AI.

Agree 100%. In reality, you wouldn't declare war if you were not prepared and had no army or navy, and even if you did you would want to put them in a good position to take the enemy quickly.

Well, I can agree with comparison to Civ features. But these games have different tunes.
Civ4 is about faction management with no battle map, and ETW is more about military tactics with batle map.

So not everything that is possible in CIV4 can be or is sensible to implement in ETW, but that is obvious ofc.

Naval invasions is just a promised but undelivered feature, dealing with AI script, hopefully they will patch it up soon!
