Really, though, tobacco is just a plant, it's only when you smoke it or suck/chew on it that it causes any great health problems. You could probably eat it and not get anything... if you wanted to.
I'm not sure what the difference between chew and just plain tobacco is... but that's a different discussion.

A salve would probably be safe, and if it can prevent something it would be a great switch for tobacco farmers to keep their jobs while smoking dies out as a ... hobby.

The article says that in all of the tests it has succeccfully protected all candidates from HIV infection. Granted that the tests have to be few and far between... and I'm not sure how you would legally put a human in a situation where contracting AIDS is a real possibility... but if that extends to even just 50% of all cases in the world everywhere it would be a serious victory against HIV and its epidemic spread.

The problem with chewing tobacco isn't the chewing, its when it its in the mucus membranes in your mouth which absorb the carcinogen. Sticking it in a vagina would do the same thing.

Well see, the real carcinogen that tobacco is so infamous for doesn't come from the plant itself, but all the pesticides used to treat the plant. Organic tobacco which doesn't get treated with pesticides is therefore far safer to smoke/chew. Question is whether the pesticides rub off on this salve they're making, because if it does...
