    Icon8 Marching to the Enemy

Comparing the Total War games I can say two things; RTW was better than mtw1 as far as marching to the enemy, in other words how cool it looked.

Mtw2 I felt was worse than rtw in that part because of the cliff things, they always irritated me.

I think ETW kills RTW in the marching to the enemy part, I love watching it. Often in the other total war games I'd get bored to tears watching and waiting as my troops march to the enemy, in ETW I am entertained all the time watching and waiting.

It's even better when they have artillery and are shooting you as you march.

    Well the poll is open.

haha, honestly, i like to have the advantage of a defensive position

But usually, when i have to attack, it has something of a desperate last attempt, which adds some extra flavor of adrenaline (yes, in a strategy game XD) to the cake.

As far as i can remember all the TW games have had excellent "mobilise" music.. though i have to say i cant really remember how it goes in Empire. At least, MTW, RTW and M2TW did... i never played much shogun.

Overall i think Medieval 2 had the most atmosphere in the battles, during mobilisation or otherwise, the sound and art design were spot on i think.

Fortunately for Empire half of the work is done within the game now, the drummers add to the immersion a great deal (at least when using the excellent drummer mod).

Personally, i don't think the march in any of the games are particularly interesting after the first few times. ETW isn't bad, thanks to the added tension from taking cannon fire--but i think RTW had the highest coolness factor partially because of the impact of going 3D. It was just cool to be able to zoom in and watch the troops in formation with all their armor marching forwards for the first time.

Blade you don't have enough posts yet to vote on polls. It is stupid. What would your vote be? We'll tally it in at the end. lol

lol... I used to be zoomed in, I'd have the camera move speed at about 35%, then I'd go up and down the front line, turn it around and keep repeating til I got to the end (With Rome). I was freaking mental about that.

(at least when using the excellent drummer mod).

I liked shogun, mostly because it was new and innovative.

But I also loved the quiet music as the armies eyed each across the field before making any movements. Something serene about it.

..which is why I'd fall head over heels for a Shogun 2 treatment.

I you used the RTR mod, nothing looked quite as impressive as a phalanx line closing on the enemy with the spears forward.

I used to THINK I disliked the nonlooping music in mtw1, (once it played it stopped), but I think about now I never did dislike it, it never bothered me strangely... the 3D total wars always made me picky about what music I mod in.

See, there was just something oddly mood setting for me with the music in Shogun.

That one, two massive armies of samurai facing each other from across hills, archers at the ready. Massive No Dachi swords slung, ready to strike fear. Each army waiting to see who would make their move first.

I get a little of that with Empire, especially as the armies march and the cannons fire, etc.. but there is something missing with the sounds in Empire. The guns and cannons all need more umph to them for lack of a better term.

If you want a cool marching treat, pay attention to whether your Line Infantry are disciplined or not. Swedes, Frenchmen, Brits and the like all march with muskets shouldered or upright, and stand at the ready with their guns resting on their shoulder at the ready. Now pay attention to the Russians... their Line Infantry march sloppily with their guns held low, slung on their arms, and when their standing at the ready, they hold their muskets across their hips, or even use them as canes!

Check it out, really cool little tidbit.

I have noticed this a little, I watched the Hessians in the demo really closely and noticed they marched, like goofs or just lazy slobs.

But then looking at grenadiers they seem noble when marching.

Vanilla marching in ETW is already awesome, but wait until you put on one of the fife/drums mods. I swear I almost had a nerdgasm the first time I heard British Grenadier playing while I march my redcoats into battle.

All options are equal to zero from the beginning...

This is about voting to see which comes out supreme (most votes), so if we put I don't like marching as an option then we are putting a positive on a zero. It's irrelevent. lol

I thought it might be useful to take action against enemy artillery blasting away my soldiers.

But I'll take a closer look next time.
